Which refrigerent is in my '95 E300D?
R12 or R134? Is "Duracool" any good? It's really hot where I live--110+ is common in the summer.

Should be a sticker in the engine bay that will tell you. They take different fittings so it is not possible to put in the wrong one (well - unless you make a serious effort with adapters, etc. - not recommended).

Stick with the original refrigerant. If hydrocarbons were widely-used here, I would consider them. But as they are rare (and illegal in a handful of states), I am using 134a. I don't want extra liability hanging over my head if I get in an accident and the hydrocarbon refrigerant causes any sort of problem.

134
Your '95 E300D has 134 in it. I have the same car - if you want to double check, there should be a green sticker (mine was green after I wiped off all the grime) along the front of the engine housing once you lift up the hood. The low pressure connection on mine has a blue cap and is up on top - following the AC line back toward the washer fluid reservoir. The high pressure connection has a black cap and is located down in front of the engine - below the fuel pump pulley.
