W123 Simple Exhaust Question

I recently had my exhaust header flange break (pic #2); I was trying to remove the header pipe but can't figure out how to free it from the center muffler pipe (pic #1). Is it supposed to come out? Any tricks anyone has to share? So far I've tried PB Blaster, pipe wrench, and chisel/hammer...

thanks a bunch!
loudly,
-noah

Its pretty tough getting them apart without heat, sometimes.

Just be glad its not welded.

You may need to take a hack saw or cold chisel to the piece that will be replaced.

The 80 must be different. on my 85 the down pipe/header pipe has 2 bolts and a flange that bolts the 2 pieces of pipe together. It also hangs on a bracket off the transmission.

your picture looks rusty, those slip joints can be a PITA. heat, hammer chissel. and elbo grease.

Thanks for the input--maybe a whole new muffler setup is in order.

your 80 is NA? the 85 is turboed. so the down pipe is different. Iam familiar with the none turbo eng. how they hook up.

Hi Charlie:
Yes, normally aspirated on the car. So now it's slow *and* loud.

I've been curious if I'm missing another exhaust bracket--I have the bracket on the transmission but not sure if there should be another one between the center muffler and the transmission. It seems rather wobbly...

There is only the bracket on the trans. and the 4 rubber donuts it hangs on at the rear muffler.
