617.952 manual tranny engine?
In my endless search for a good 617 for my 300D, I just came across something different. Some yard in NC had a 617 turbo engine for sale. When I got the VIN and engine numbers, it turned out to be a euro VIN (the car has been crushed) with a 617-952-10-.... engine number. Apparently the "10" in the engine number corresponds to a manual transmission. I'm not going to use it because I'm not willing to switch flywheels and risk changing the balance. This would be perfect for someone who wanted to put a 617 turbo in a manual 240D.
The interesting part is that I had never heard of a factory turbo set up for a manual tranny. I have no idea where the donor car was originally sold. |

This thing had a 617-952-10- engine number, how would you decode that?

A database error.
617-952-10...617-910 coincidence? The 910 was the W115 300D engine and also made its way into early first year W123 300D's. |

That was the number stamped on the block.

I think you are correct, and I think these guys BS'd me. I ran the euro VIN number through the russian site and came up with a 617-912-10- engine number (the rest of the number matched the 952 number they gave me).

I don't know if it was an error, I asked them to verify it was a 617.952 engine after they gave me the euro VIN for the donor. They gave me the 617.952-10 number and told me that they had already sold the turbo separately. I smell a rat.

What you can't trust junk yards?
![]() I hate em, I'd want to carry a pistol around some of them that I have seen.

These guys must be stupid as well as sleazy, obviously I would have sent it back when it showed up as a 912 instead of a 952. Maybe they don't think there is any difference and I would have just swapped over the turbo onto the N/A engine? Idiots!

I don't know which yard, this all went through a broker. Anyway, I can't use that engine anyway, it's a 617 N/A with a manual tranny flywheel. I'm shopping for a low mileage 617 turbo for my '82 300D. So far I haven't found anything acceptable.

Unless you're dealing with a German-specific yard, that is VERY likely.

That's why I verify the engine number and the VIN when someone claims they have the correct engine.
