from wikipedia...

DMC Houston announced on July 30, 2007 that the car would be returning into very limited production (about 20 cars per year) in 2008. [20] The newly produced cars will have a base price of $57,500 and have new stainless steel frames and lighter fiberglass underbodies, with optional extras such as GPS, an enhanced "Stage 2" engine, and possibly a new modern interior. The cars will be made with 80% old parts and the rest new.

I wonder how much market they are going to have? I assume that anything that limited will go up in value, so there will probably be a waiting list of people buying them as investments.

Personally, I don't think they will sell that good. 57,000 is too much money in my opinion, as much as I love them. I could buy a stock DMC-12 from 81 with like 16,000k original miles and even seen some with original tires go for max..30-40,000$ The nice thing about those ones is that they're brand new. I agree with you though, I bet there is a waiting list.

Exclamation Need estimates please!

Alright everyone, if you guys could please help me out on a price of this 240D my dad and I saw today. When I called the repair shop about an engine rebuild a few days ago, I was told that there was a 240D outside his shop with a shot tranny.

The past owner of this 240D didn't want it anymore due to the price of a rebuild on the tranny. However, he had the engine rebuilt by Mercedes-Benz of Los Angeles and we were told the engine has about 40,000 miles on it. He couldn't start it up because it had no battery and no tranny hooked up, the tranny ended up being in the trunk lol. From what I saw of the engine it was pretty clean. We asked him (the mechanic) how much for the engine and he said we could just make an offer.

Then he ended up offering the entire car. The 240D itself isn't in horrible condition. The paint seemed ok, windows were all good, the dash had cracks bigger than the grand canyon though and the interior was very dusty, and from what I saw I didn't see any rust. Also the A/C doesn't work on it. He said the past owner took it to Texas often and lost reverse over there.

Knowing this I thought maybe this would be better than my car. Could I just swap the tranny from my car to that one? I checked the year and it's an 81. Would my tranny fit on the car? What do you think a good asking price would be for it? All in all, it's a 1981 240D with no tranny, rebuilt engine with 40K on it, no A/C, missing a hood star and just dirty. I was thinking 2,000? Also what would be a good asking price just for the engine itself? Thanks everyone! I'm kind of excited! I might actually have a well running car if this pulls through!

I would try to get some details on this "rebuild." It seems unlikely that a dealer would completely rebuild the engine, they may have exchanged it for a reman engine or they may have done some type of partial rebuild (maybe just the head). Do they or the dealer have any paperwork on the engine?

For some reason I didn't think about that until I was on my way driving home. We're going back tomorrow to offer him a price and I'll ask for the papaerwork then. Any idea on how much we could ask for in case he does have the paperwork? I really hope this guy is telling the truth, be nice to get a dependable engine and maybe the car too.

I would say $800 for the engine ready to install (up to $1200 if it has paperwork to document the rebuild claim), or a similar price (maybe slightly less) for the car as-is.

I would pay $2K if it's really a fresh engine, having to take the whole car might be a PITA.

To the op.

Why do you think you need a new 240 motor? If its been cared for I would not expect it to give trouble at that mileage.

Craig mentioned a head gasket and they do tend to go south around 275 to 300K on the turbo motors, but I don't think they would on a na engine like the 240d.

I agree a head gasket failure is unlikely, I was just trying to figure out what kind of "rebuild" this engine had.
