what is the difference in these two clusters

okay, the upper cluster is out of my car, it was in bad shape so I found another off of the internet. I got to looking at them and the one on top out of my car has a relay looking thing on it and the lower one doesnt...

I have already changed out all the bulbs in the lower cluster to LED and its a much nicer cluster and want to use it... will it be ok and what are the differences..

Well, you've also got a different number of pin outs on the round connector.

Gasser vs diesel maybe? We had this discussion a while ago, with two different 82 clusters, one had it and one didn't. So, I checked mine and same thing. I don't think we ever came up with a definitive answer for why some had that thing and not.

The lower cluster is for a gasser. Notice the line for the economy/vac gauge.

Your fuel gauge will be inaccurate if you swap the clusters out.

Are you going to come to our Texas meet? Nice to see another Houston area member!

Jim
thanks for bringing this to my attention, I checked the car wiring harness and even though the lower cluster has that extra pin, on the car harness, that pin slot is empty... good catch.

and redassag00 I will have to see about the meet, do a little checking on some stuff, but I don't think I will have the car up to a daily driver yet...

thanks for the observations, please keep them coming..

Post the date codes on the individual assemblies (triangle looking stamps on the back) for comparison. Maybe this will help. Could simply be a running production update to the cluster.

Question

Just curious ...... but why would the fuel gauge in the cluster function differently for a gas vehicle than it does for a diesel vehicle? Isn't the gauge just a simple display device indicating the change in resistance as the float changes position in the sender unit?

JimmyL, that's the thing I don't think we ever came up with a reason for being different. I've never researched it.

The only real differences I can spot on the cluster are the extra pin and the black box.

They should work the same though.

thanks!

You guys are awesome, I am not that computer savvy and all the arrows on the pics were just what I needed. Thanks again for looking into my question. I will install the lower cluster and report back if there are any problems. next problem is finding another CCU temp sensor that hangs from the top of the dash, I broke mine putting it back in....

thanks again
