Engine numbers

According to my Haynes manual, the engine ID number is somewhere in the general area towards the rear of the engine but I'll be dipped if I can find it.
I want to replace my alt belt but ******** lists 2 belt #'s depending on engine number
Does anyone have a more specific location that I can look at?
Thanks.
Andrew

On a 300D It is between the end of the fuel injection pump and the oil filter housing an. It might take a rag with carburator or brake cleaner and a brush to scrub the area See Diesel Giants site for pics.
http://www.dieselgiant.com/mercedes_engine_and_transmission.htm you have to page down to see the pics.
