Diesel SEC, MPG report, first tank of diesel 32MPG

Well I traveled 1075 km, and it took 80L Mostly highway.

If my calcualtions are correct that is 31.6MPG US.

My secret, 2.24 rear gears, standard trans, and stock alda settings.

I will be switching to 2.47 gears when I get a chance.

Did you have the odometer correctly calibrated for that rear end?

2nd tank of diesel

30 MPG,

921.6 km, 72.129L
572.6 Mi, 19.05 Gal

More city driving than the first tank.

Clutch holding up very well thus far, very fun to drive.

the SEC is moderately more aerodynamic than the SD... it may help a bit.
2.24 wow. with a clutch... I am worried about the 3.07 in my 82D... can't wait though.
I would think once you stop flooring it, you will get upwards of 36MPG. that combo should REALLY get good mileage.

Hey Icefire...This sounds interesting. Couple of questions: How bad is the difference in acceleration with the 2,24 rear (in comparison to 3,07)? Noticeable, but not too severe, or... What kind of rpms are you seeing on highway (say at 100kmh). Price of diesel went up over here at the beginning of the year - it now costs 1,40 euro/l (about 8 USD a gallon), so I am looking for ways to keep on Benzin'

Acceleration below 20 km/h is quite slow, definitly noticable, above its as fast as any 300 SD. economical(2600rpm) shift points are 2nd gear 30kph, 3rd gear 60kph, 4th 90kph,

At 100 kph, my RPM is exactly 1900, i have not traveled any faster than 140 KPH because of the strict speeding laws.

With an auto trans I think a 2.24 might be livable, with a manual, I will probably change to 2.47, for a small improvment around town.

will report back next week. with another mpg figure.

Excellent. I've been looking for a differential and seen plenty of 2.24s but have thought that it would be too drastic a change... I am doing about 28-29 mpg right now, but with these fuel prices a bit more would be great... Thanks!

A six speed would be the berries. You could take off easily and get the ultra overdrive too.

A transaxle? Probably a redesign of the whole rear half of the car.

Has anybody tried modifying the undercarriage to decrease drag? I've noticed the newer MBs seem to have a lot of attention to this area.

How did that work out? I'm guessing the diesel engine fit pretty easily into an engine bay that was designed for a big V8.

A W126 has an identical engine bay to a C126, so the engine side of the swap was very very easy, Wiring for the diesel includes, water temp, oil pressure and glow plugs thats it, The Alternator is off the M117 with the pulley changed so its an 80 amp unit.

The driverside engine shock is in the wrong location, it is currently unconnected, I may change that and weld a small braket in the proper location.

The only difficulites I had with the swap, were in regards to a manual trans, I had to get a custom made pilot bearing, custom make the shift rods, Driveshaft was custom as well, same thing with speedo cluster.

I had the flywheel balanced but they did a **** job, I asked them to balance it to the flex plate, and they said that it was "close enough" to neutral balance. I certainly wont be going back to that machine shop unfortunatly there are only 2 shops within 100 miles that balance flywheels.
