OM602 Turbo "Cutting Out" under load / rpm's.

I just got my latest "Frankenbenz" on the road. It's a '93 190E body shell with an '87 190D 2.5 Turbo engine mated to a 5-speed tranny. Overall the car runs well. However, under hard accelleration, the engine tends to "cut out" as if it's hitting a rev limiter at about 3500-4000 rpm. I know that there isn't much need to run at these rpm's, but I was trying an Italian Tune-Up when I noticed this phenomena.

It will accellerate hard until 3500 rpm or so, then hesitate, then wind up again, then hesitate again, etc.

I'm looking for guidance on how to troubleshoot this problem. Do you folks think it's more likely to be an internal IP issue, or perhaps a boost controller issue?

Any help would be appreciated.

SteveM.

If it is a boost problem I believe a boost gauge would answer that question.

How about emission controls, EGR and ect.

Sounds like it's running out of fuel. Make sure the lift pump is operating at rated capacity, filters and tank screen all clean, etc.

The first thing I would check is the fuel delivery pressure - see if the pressure drops off when the car bogs down. IIRC it should stay in the 10-15 PSI range.

Or the OBP valve is working as it should and he has way too much boost.

Good ideas guys.

Good ideas guys. I think I'll start with new fuel filters just for good measure. Since I "pieced" this car together, I have no idea when the filters were changed last.

If that doesn't help, I'll move on to checking the actual boost levels and the operation of the overboost protection relay and wastegate.
