New theory about my electrical smell

I talked with my indie garage today about my electrical smell in my 1985 300TDT. The symptoms were an electrical smell and the alternator light came on. Light went out after restarting, and I have been driving it since with no real noticeable smell and the Alt light is not on.

My mechanic suggested it my be a slipping belt and I am confusing the smells. This also explains the alt light. Voltage checks fine, and brushes on voltage regulator are due to be replaced, but have more life in them.

I checked the belts, I can deflect the alt ones about an inch easily, and the long power steering belt even more. I am not up to tightening the belts so I will see if my indie can do that tomorrow.

Thoughts?

yeah, kill this thread and add the info to the original thread... Brian has been known to ban users for posting the solution on a different thread from the original one...

Yea, but it is a new theory!

I don't know if it is the solution, and I am looking for input. The mechanic didn't look at it as he was closing when I dropped in. He just said it may be that.

Thanks and don't ban me
