1984 300D Euro Fan Removal

Hello Yet Again
Got the bolts loosened behind the fan, yet you cannot remove them. Fan is loose but you can't remove it. Whats the catch?

Thanks

I'm not familiar with that model but typically you remove a bolt that takes a hex bit (center of the second picture) which releases the fan and clutch from the pulley. Then you separate the fan from the clutch if necessary.

You're taking the wrong bolts off. You are removing the fan blade to clutch mounting bolts. Remove the 4 bolts holding the fan hub to the water pump. Should be 10mm heads. Once you remove the fan clutch hub assembly from the water pump you can remove the clutch assembly for replacement.

What they said, loosen the other bolts (the ones that are a PITA to reach).

Yes, the outer bolts hold the fan to the clutch and the inner bolts hold the assembly to the engine. Do you have a thin 10mm wrench?

That's the spirit.

BTW, try not to mess up the clutch if it isn't already damaged; they're pretty expensive.

It seems to be fine, but I haven't touched it yet.

It looked undamaged in the photo, they cost about $270 to replace.
