Either way its an AWSOME boat. A heck of a lot better then the "never want to start" Chevy V8's in the Silverton that I used to pilot.

I'm not a big fan of either since I had to cut the side open on one to get the fuel tanks out, and it was the second time. Lets just say they are not the Mercedes of the boating world...

Gas boats are damn near worthless these days!

Volvo makes a great diesel, but parts are very expensive.

What would the Mercedes of the boating world be? if I ever hit the lottery...

That definitely would not be a fun job, how do you repair the fiberglass after you replaced the tank? and do I dare ask why a fuel tank had to come out? (Algae maybe?)

No the fuel tank's (2) had to come out twice because they are built cheap, and they didn't secure the tank. So they just slid around, wore a hole in the bottom, and dumped 120 gallons of gas into the bilge. The first yard secured them, but since the stringers are 2x4's they sit low so 5 years later the port rotted out.

The way you get the tanks out on that particular Silverton (32is feet) is you cut a hole in the side and pick them up with a fork lift. Than you glass the side of the boat back on. Yes its a big job. Re glassing it isn't that hard, just messy and time consuming.

Their are many very well built powerboat's out their. The old Bertrams, Hatt's, and Chris Crafts are wonderfull boats.

Cabo 45

It all boils down to cost. A Cabo 45 will cost 4 times, what that Carver goes for. A Whiticar or Rybo 5-6++ times more.

But with boats you get what you pay for. I have worked on enough of them to curse crappy work. A lot of people don't really know enough to be able to spot the difference, in say how a cleat is mounted. But it matters, doing it right may cost them $100, but they can do it cheap for $10 and 95% of the people can't tell the difference.

Carvers and Silvertons, I hate them both. The Bayliners of the cruising world IMO. Unfortunately, my Father-in-law has a Carver, Brother-in-law has a Silverton, ... I can't say too much.

A neighbor at the marina has that Cabo Express, with twin 720hp Cat C-14s it gets it.

On the other hand, I spent most of the day in the engine room of my friend's 53 Hatt, I'm pretty tired of seeing that thing also.

Well considering the cost (free) just swap what you have to over and cross your fingers. But marine engines are really different, you might be able to get away with a car long block since the boat is light. You want to use as much of the currant engine in that boat as possible, check the cam it might be different.

Is this a lake boat? If so you might be able to get away without changing the manifolds and risers, if its used in salt plan on them.
that's the thing... I have plenty of free motors, just no idea what I wanna put back in... it's always been a lake boat, so salt is no issue. I know nothing about the boat other than it's length... and it's yellow... I got it free as back payment due... no carb on it, and the dock owner said it had recently overheated... probably needs a water pump.
oh well, back to Diesel discussion...

I couldn't fine very much on the Rybos, but I do have to say that I'm very impressed with the Whiticars, in partucular the fit and finish.

Well, since you guys brought it up & Hatteras is an excellent name in boats, I have a 1969 Hatteras 38 Double Cabin (actually it's a triple cabin) with two 8V53N's in it for sale.

Boat is is good condition, but - as is with all boats - it needs a little TLC. Got lots of electronics, too.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but need the cash..........

Is there marine stuff for the Cummins 4B? I'd sure consider one in my 26' Sea Ray cuddy in place of the sbc. I think I can get one from an old chevy bread truck.

A Rybo is an amazing boat;
http://www.rybovich.com/Welcome.aspx

I worked/drove a 47. I miss that boat, it was like working on a Rolls Royce, so nice! After that going on a mortal boat was just like pfff junk.

There are a lot of very nice custom and semi custom sportfish build on the east coast.

If you don't fish and want a cruiser, a Grandbanks, or Eastbay is the best boat you can get. A Grandbanks cost far, far more than say what a big Bayliner would cost, but its in a whole other league. Its like comparing a Chevy to a Maybach.
