help me I just bought an 84 300T need tech help
bought this off ebay and the seller states,"
the transmission began to slip slightly in first gear. I determined that the transmission fluid was a little low, so I decided to try and change it out. I got a new filter and gasket, but couldn't get the car but barely high enough to get under it. I had to stretch to drop the pan, and when I went to reinstall it, I apparently didn't get the gasket on right. I took it out for a test drive, and it still slipped a little in first gear, but not as bad. However, when I got it back to the house, transmission fluid was pouring out from the bottom of the car around the pan. So, whoever buys this car is welcome to bring your tools and jack(s), drop the pan, and install the gasket correctly. (The gasket is made of hard rubber, and I don't know if I damaged it or not). What do you think it is, does it sound like it needs a tranni overhaul or just something, ie maybe he really is mechanically inept. |

Sounds like a vacuum issue or its just a little worn.

Could be somebody has a hemorrhaging tranny and this is their way to explain it away as something simpler. Can't rule it out........

Why would a seller not fix it first if it was that simple. Big return in selling price.
If I read that in a listing, I would not have bid. If you've already bought it, assume the worst and hope for better as you replace the gasket and check the vacuum.

Hopefully it's not the front seal, vice just a gasket..
Reminds me of AC works, just needs a recharge. Hope this is not your case. |

T
Look under the car and find the black vacuum line going to the tranny. Temporarily insert the proper size T and attach a vacuum guage. Should be less than 10" at idle and quickly drop to near 0" as engine rpm increases. Too high - missing orifice under hood (Y connector). None - plugged vacuum line or vacuum leak. Wrong value - change setting on VCV (mounted on injection pump).

Remember, vacuum doesn't cause slippage
On these old Benz transmissions vacuum is only used to control (modulate) the shift. If it is slipping, it is not a vacuum problem.

what would you guess it would be
could the transmission just be toast then, I cant look at it until later. I am going to fill and seal it correctly, also put some trans x in it. I am hoping to get it to the shop to have it looked at.

Have you driven it yet? When/how does it "slip" - from neut. into 1st - at take-off - from 1st to 2nd?? Could ba a B-2 piston issue, a fairly easy fix. Good luck.
