Just created a leak at IP seal on a 603! Can I fix without pulling pump?
I adjusted my IP's timing a bit today and now I see an oil leak where it meets the engine block. I'm assuming that's a cork gasket there. Is there a way to fix the leak without pulling the injection pump? It's not a flood of oil but its more than I'm happy with.
Is there any hope for this without pulling the IP?

No. The pump must come off to replace the gasket. Mercedes does not use cork gaskets.

Well, I guess I should look at the bright side... it's not an expensive part
http://www.performanceproducts4benz.com/productpage.aspx?pid=103504&cid=13&sid=60 Man! I wish I wouldn't have messed with the timing. You'd think That MB would have used a metal gasket (like the head gasket) for something that's going to be adjusted several times in the life of the car. I'm not sure I like MB diesel engineering today. Not something I usually say. But I can tell this isn't going to be a fun day or couple days of work.

Is there any way to 'massage' the gasket back into a spot where it'll seal? Anyone done this?

Are you CERTAIN the rear bolt is loose or missing?

Take a deep breath. The gasket pictured in your link is not the correct gasket. I didn't know anything about the rear bolt. But I bet you're right that it's not sitting flush to the block after adjusting it. I didn't loosen the rear bolt. I could hear it creaking today when I adjusted the pump. I bet you that it has shifted a bit on the rear mount. Like you said it's probably not square to the block now.

Are you sure that's the gasket on the 603? That looks like an O-ring. I'd think that the seal between the IP and the block would be a gasket. But I've never torn it apart so I haven't a clue.
That thing I liked from Performance Prods looks like it's got matching 3 holes for the bolts. Quote:

Did you notice the text in the link under the picture of the incorrect gasket? "We are sorry, but this item is not available online for your selected model" I'm kind of afraid to ask but exactly how were you planning on setting the IP timing on your engine? You indicated in an earlier post that you paid the dealer $100 to check and set your timing... I'm confused.

Wow, that's an o-ring. I can imagine that's hard to get in place. I could almost swear I see a paper or some type of material gasket between the IP and the Block. I'll go look again. I guess I'm probably incorrect.
As far as the dealer's timing, he used an A-B light. But I think I got the engine to run a hair smoother at idle by retarding it a tad from where he had it. That's why I wanted to try retarding it a bit more. I marked the original spot he had set it at in-case I wanted to go back. Quote:

Well I tightened the bolt closest to where the leak is springing from (top towards engine side) a little more and it sheared. I really don't think I torqued it that hard. My guess is 20-30ftlbs.
Any idea on where to buy IP mounting bolts?

I had the same leak as you after adjusting my IP timing except mine was a fast drip. I loosened all the mount bolt and all of the injector lines then retightened the IP and then the lines. The lines were holding the IP crooked. The oring fits on the snout of the IP.

With all the work involved with replacing the IP to block o-ring, consider the following while you're there opportunities:
- reseal IP = MB sells all the o-rings and gaskets except for the control rod sensor - replace delivery valve seals - replace broken injector line clips - reuse or replace vacuum pump gasket? - do you have an old style or new style vacuum pump? If it's an old style, at least check that the plastic ball carriers are intact. Sixto 87 300D |

its an o-ring, its not that hard to replace ive done it before. you probibally got it out of its groove, and pinched it wich caused the leak.
