UPDATE: On My New W124 Purchase
Some of you may remember that I purchased a 87 300D on Ebay a few weeks back. Was offered by a Nissan dealer in South Carolina. I was told it had a serious fuel leak from under the hood and it wouldn't start. I bid $2,100, won the auction and got back home in NH. As I had hoped the massive fuel leak turned out to be the return fuel line - Score one for me! The starting problem turned out to be the fuseable link in the glow plug relay - Score 2 for me! The only other issues are the 2 rear windows not operating, the AC recir. button not operating and the defroster selector button causes the AC to turn off. This is really a nice car. A couple very tiny surface rust issues but thats it. Very nice and clean interior. This engine is unbelievable after driving the 617 engine all these years.
What a powerhouse. I guess I took a chance on it and it worked out great for me. Bert - NH

Oh, I forgot to mention it had 4 17" AMG rims on it and the tire set was new 7,000 miles ago.

Score indeed. Good luck with it. I scored an 87 a few years back for 2200. It was low on power and the previous owner thought it an engine problem. Turned out to be a diconnected boost line to the ALDA. Whoop!

Sounds like you got a good one. I agree on the difference from the 617, I always find myself going too fast because the 603 is so much quieter and smoother.
You say "the defroster selector button causes the AC to turn off." The CCU shuts down completely? The W124 version is designed to do that if there is an electrical overload in the climate control system somewhere. Jeremy

Isn't the Defrost button supposed to shut off the A/C and turn everything to defrost on high fan?? That sounds normal to me, but what do I know??

What happens with the defroster is that I usually have the AC ON vents but if I switch to defroster it blows uncooled air. The fan still blows. Could this be the recir switch problem also?

Sounds like you got a good car for the money. Check to see if it has the new style vacuum pump (4 torx screws on the cover) and don't let it overheat.
The recirc problem could be the vacuum pod. It is not worth fixing IMO if you are still getting airflow through the vents. I'm not sure about the A/C to the defrost. I would think that you should be able to get A/C to flow there as well. I will try mine when I'm out today. GSXR would be able to answer that question.

I beleive the AC compressor is supposed to start in defrost mode to help rid the inside of the windshield of moisture.

Defrost also sets max heat. The heater wins over the compressor.

You mean I'm supposed to get all that hot air in defrost mode? I don't think my 126 does that. When I get it put back together I'll have to try it.

Your W126 should......they are supposed to blast German-Hurricane Force hot air (dehumidified by A/C) onto the window in Defrost mode.

Ha, I saw that one! You got a good deal, too! I remember asking about the leak and they said it was pretty significant, but didn't know where it was coming from under the hood. Congrats!

Yes. You may want to check your monovalve out too.

Further Update on 87 300D purchase
I got the recirc button figured out. Was just a loose connection on the back. And strangley, the AC works like 95% of the time now. Much better than it did when I first got it. However, I still need to restart occasionally for it to go back to cold air.
This really is a nice car. I have replaced the headlamp surround and foglight lens', installed a new hood pad (was missing) and installed a new radio. This engine is soooo much peppier than the 617! I love it!
