fuse panle removal?

can you remove the fuse panel from under the hood?

and, the fuse to may blower motor and ac compressor is melted, bought it that way. there's probably a reason it melted and just fixing the fuse terminal will probably not help?

is this a 240D? what year? I am sure anything can be done... it's much easier on a 126 I bet.

If the fuse is melted then it is plastic-based. When you have time, replace all of the fuses with ceramic/copper fuses.

In some later models, the factory replaced the fuse in the fuse panel with an external 30 Amp fuse. In your case (W123 cars) that was not done. The overload that melted the fuse may have come from something that jammed the blower and kept it from rotating. In such a case, the blower will draw more (too much) current. Normally, the fuse blows, but sometimes the overload is gradual and heat builds up, melting the fuse if it is plastic and even damaging the fuse panel. There was just a thread here a day or so ago about a forum member who found a dead mouse in his W126 blower. You should check the blower to see if it spins freely. You can unplug it and connect its two leads directly to a 12 Volt battery to see if it spins (don't worry about (+/-) polarity for the couple of seconds it will take to see if the blower will spin). If the blower seems to be OK, try replacing the fuse, see what happens. I don't know what else might be on that fuse -- seems to me the a/c compressor clutch would have its own -- do you have a diagram in the cover of the fuse box?

Jeremy is right. If you do decide to remove the fuse panel, then yes, it can be removed from under the hood. After disconnecting the battery ground cable, remove all fuses and the 1 nut above the fuse panel. You will then be able to turn the panel 90 degrees and pull it out far enough to gain access to the connections on the back.

1: as mentioned, before you remove anything, disconnect both sides of the battery.

2: maybe the previous owner put in the wrong fuse or maybe the fuse card is not correct. sometimes people will go to pick and pull and grab a lid from a 300D, etc. (which does fit, but has the wrong card). The cards are really cheap at the dealer.

3: when I removed my fusebox, I did it from the bottom and top. The lower dash panel is very easy to remove and you have more working space and can see what your doing with a flashlight.

whatever method you choose, becareful because your tugging on 25 year old wiring harness, the insulation maybe brittle.

Mark all of your wires so you know where they go, or take pictures for reference. Seems to me I remember someone recommending changing one of the wires from one fuse to another, but I can't remember what for???? Maybe someone else will chime in.

its an 82 240d. the terminal is melted but in such a way i was able to put in a spare fuse and have it work. the blower was blowing fine in my driveway, but i went to try it on the road later and nothing, i assumed the fuse had blown. checked it today, not blown and the blower blows again. i dunno...no ac though. should i be able to hear the compressor kick on over the sound of the motor?
