Injector nozzles 300d
Hey all, I know this has the potential to be something like asking about which motor oil is best, but here goes anyway.
Are Bozio or Monark injector nozzles really any better than stock? I am running at least a B50 blend, so wondering if that has anything to do with performance of stock. **************.com (I know there's differing opinions on the quality of their stuff) says Monarks have a OSD 265 spec, which is better for fuels other than petro diesel. Dieselgiant seems to think Bozios are good. Side note: I do get increased idle smoke when running richer blends of bio. But never excessive smoke under way. Sometimes when I run out of bio, I'll fill up at the pump (ugghh hate the cost), and I notice considerably less idle smoke. It's grey smoke--definitely fuel smoke. If all other things are ok i.e. filters, valves adjusted, etc., could the injectors cause excess idle smoke--and more of it on bio? I was thinking maybe so if an injector is streaming fuel and not popping properly. Thanks a bunch for thoughts, input.

Several folks have mentioned timing adjustments for the higher levels of biodiesel to get a more efficient burn. Perhaps it is a combination of timing and nozzle tolerances.

The stock nozzles have an central hole drilled down the center of the pintel and up higher a larger hole across the other hole. On my car and a set of injectors I pulled from the junk yard the tiny drilled hole was completely plugged with carbon. The drilled hole is there to give some pre-fuel during idle so I am assuming that when they plug it has an effect on the idle fuel injection.
Bosio (made in Italy) and Monark (made in Germany) nozzles do hot have that central drilled pintel hole so have no hole to get plugged up. The Monarks are a replacement for stock and have a “facet” (flat spot) on the side of the pintel to give that pre-fuel during idling . (I have these in my car and bought them from C Sean Watts at around $20 each + shipping but PM him for the current price if interested as it was last year that I put them on.) On my car they are slightly quieter than the stock nozzles were. The Bosio nozzles are considered by some to be high performance nozzles and some people report a better seat of the pants throttle response. Slightly more noisy at idle. All of the above is with regular diesel fuel. Here is a pic of the stock nozzle and the drilled holes. Bosio nozzles are like the above pic but without those holes drilled in them.

Thanks for the info. I do have ip timing on the list of things to do. I also have a new head and timing chain, so those two are out as possible suspects.
So do we believe that the Monarks are better than stock? I think it is timing/injectors that are causing my idle smoke. I also get a puff of grey on take off. Not black like wot on #2. Just a grey puff--on both bio and dino and a blend. Thanks again for input.

For a quick check of your timing chain stretch this is a split picture. On the left are the Chamshaft gear and the gear timing mark lined up with the Chamshaft Tower timing mark. On the right is a pic of my Crankshaft Damper timing marks showing about 2 degrees late timing. When the engine was built it was supposed to be aligned on the 0 mark on the Cranksaft Damper. Indicating there has been about a 2 degree change since the engine was built and 198,000 miles has passed.

My (and the factory's) $.02
What is available today as 'stock' is not what was when our cars were built. Bosch no longer manufactures older design "S" size nozzles in Germany, only the newer direct injection type now. However, a handful of companies still do. Of those, Monark has the longest history, best warranty and very good quality control. They're also ISO 9001 and TUV certified.
The pilot hole design was phased out some time ago and the new design, sometimes called self cleaning, has a facet cut on the needle adjacent to the seat. This accomplishes the same pre-injection of a small amount of fuel right before the main charge to quiet and help smooth the engine. ALSO, a large shipment of nozzles and injectors is on the way, shipping this week. Installation, pop and balance service will resume shortly after they arrive - stay tuned.

Sounds like the Bozios are to diesels what Holly carbs are to gassers--in the way that a little more performance is the goal. Sounds like Monarks are simply an improvement of the original. True?

The newer Bosch Spray Nozzles also have similar "facet" type pintels. But those Bosch nozzles are not made for my year/model of car and I believe cost more.
