Hmm, the information .pdf does not mention the weight. And the real name of the oil is Esso Gear Oil MB317:
www.dzi.com.co/pdf_esso/Esso-Gear-Oil-MB-317.pdf Esso Gear Oil MB 317 is a premium synthetic blend manual transmission lubricant that is blended from high quality base oils and a high-performance additive system. This manual transmission fluid was developed for use in Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans and A Class passenger vehicles. The product is approved against MB 235.10. |

"Outstanding low temperature fluidity which reduces wear at start-up (SAE 80W-90) "
This was part of the description I found, which might be a tad on the heavy side for a MB tranny. http://www.dzi.com.co/pdf_esso/Esso-Gear-Oil-MB-317.pdf

Is the Mobil 5/20 Synthetic straight motor oil or an ATF? My wagon is up and running with the new 5 speed. It's making some noises, I'm hoping I damaged the carrier bearing on the install and I'm going to try that. BUT I have synthetic Mobil ATF in there, maybe the 5/20 will help...

Great to know about the heavier oil.
Well I'm not 100% sure just yet but a MB friend who knows much more about them than I (he used to own VW Man shop in Minneapolis) came over last weekend and drove my wagon. It has a constant raspy sound and vibrations at higher speeds. He said he was pretty confident it was the carrier bearing and I probably messed it up banging it on. Or it was something else in the driveline, not the transmission which is good news. I'm going to bring it to an indy next week and see if he can tell what's going on.
