engine interchangability

would my '85 300D engine fit into an '82 240D?

both cars are auto - the body on the 240D is in better shape...just wondering....

If you swap the transmission and driveshaft as well, yes, it will bolt in.

The rear end ratios are very different so you would need to consider changing the differential as well or MPG will suffer, which would also require changing the speedometer to keep it accurate.

The cooling system is also a larger capacity but the 300D can still work with the smaller system in the 240D.

The smaller 240 rad will be ok if you don't work it too hard. I don't know if high altitude requires more cooling capacity or not.

If you use the small 240 rad keep an eye on it and if it tends to run hot you will need to upgrade it too.

converting the 240D will be a real project.
Is there an expansion tank on the car? if not, add that to the list and get the 300D radiator and hose associated with connecting those two items.

Absolutely you need a full exhaust system from a turbo donor car.

Check that the linkage pivot on the firewall will work with the accelerator rack on the turbo engine and geet that from a donor car and tack weld it on the firewall if necessary.

The differential could be the low ratio used only in the '85 tuebodiesels, for better acceleration the 3.07 ratio gears from previous year turbos will be fine at some loss of fuel mileage.
Be sure youget the turbo transmission that fits and yes the driveshaft will have to also be acquired.
It might be easier to find a stock tubodiesel that is running and avoid all the work.

It makes the most sense to start with two cars for such a swap. Its all bolt in except adding the second engine shock mount on the 240 chassis for the turbo motor.

You can have the simplicity of the 240 HVAC, crank windows if you are lucky, no sunroof and a lighter car. Personally I love my 240/300. Its NA with a euro motor though, and now it has the elusive five speed in it.

Tomorrow I am getting a new radio/cd player installed and on Saturday I am headed to Ohio to visit my lovely #1 Daughter and family. I am hoping for mid thirties mileage.

It really has plenty of power and will accelerate in fifth without down shifting even with the 307 diff.
