Reserve Tank light

Has anyone had trouble with the reserve light coming on sporadically when the tank has plenty of fuel?

Clean the sender, fuel sludge can make it stick.

What would make the light stay on all the time, even if the tank is full?

Sludge holding the switch down and/or shorted wires.

I have more difficulty with it refusing to come on when I'm legitimately low.

Me too with the 126, so I make sure to top off before I get too low.

W210 low fuel light

My W210 car has the opposite problem -- the light is on dimly all the time and doesn't illuminate even when the gauge is on "R." It has only two wires from the sender -- there's no separate switch and wire as in 123 and 124 cars. The sender is a zero to 2000 ohms rheostat that the electronics in the instrument cluster turns into a signal for the fuel gauge. I have to remove the cluster to see how the electronics work -- or rather, doesn't work.

Update -- pulled the W210 cluster. It's all surface mount. Easy to R&R, only two plugs for the whole thing but probably impossible to repair.

The low-fuel light is driven by a small IC, beyond my ability to diagnose or repair. I suspect Mercedes would just replace the entire assembly at a cost I probably don't want to know. Unless I get lucky and find one in a junkyard, I'll probably just live without it. Wife and I were both raised on cars that didn't have warning lights for fuel so we're used to keeping an eye on the needle.

Interestingly, my 1963 Alfa Romeo Guilia Spyder had a low fuel light in its cluster -- I didn't even know what it was for awhile, had never seen one.

When did Mercedes start with low fuel lights?
