Fuel return hoses

I bought a set of fuel return hoses from the MB parts Guy in Goleta, CA.

Nice set,OEM braided hose, all cut to length, with a new plug for the last port. And just in case a trim was/is needed a new razor blade was in the set.

Did have 2 hoses that were leaking and the long hose under the accelerator rod mtg was suspect as well.

All went well but that nipple next to the Accel. mtg is sure hard to get started. I've got litle fingers and I had a heck of a time getting that one started. Once started it seated fine. I did make sure all lines were seated against the base.

I have see these nipples rotated in all positions of a clock face. What is right, or is there a right or wrong way to position the return line nipples. Mine , for the most part are inline with the block. The last(near firewall) is turned 90 Degrees to the block. it doesn't seem to matter for operational reasons. .

Anyway the whole job took less than a half hour and now Freesil has new fuel return lines.

Now on to tracking down what seems to be an oil leak at the oil cooler or possibly the lower oil line right at the cooler.

Freesil has the telltale oil residue line blowing back on the left front of the hood, but the bottom of the left side of the grille has oil dripping off it.....I wonder if it is the oil cooler as the connection on the lower hose is gunked up but the hose isn't soft or that oily either.

The hose that takes the hot oil to the cooler is the one that suffers the most.
When I look for leaks in the engine area I degrease the area and get it as clean as possible. I find this to be the best way to look for leaks.

There is no correct way for the nipples to point. As long as they are daisy chained together and the last hose is plugged you are good to go.

If the oil cooler line is wet and or dripping, you better get on it. the hoses don`t get soft and spongy. as they age and get cooked from the hot oil they get as hard as bakalite. that`s my experience with mine.

the oil flow goes up from the bottom of the cooler and out the top. so the lower hose gets the worst of it. It`s one of those PITA jobs, that was a piece of cake after your are done.

All mine point straight up. Didn't know there were nipples that were "bent".

I recently did this job as well to my rock-hard return lines. And yes, I agree that there is no particular orientation necessary for the nipples. What a difference this simple hose replacement makes! No more diesel smell after you shut the motor off. None at all. Love it!

why do you all suppose MB went away from the hard return lines? the older OMs had lines similar to the injector lines... the almighty dollar I suppose...

Can the Viton Fuel Return Hoses stand up to repeated removal better than the stock Fuel Return Hose?
