temperature wheel removal

I want to swap the CCU temp. wheel - how do I take the center pin out?
The opening on the side shows the slotted pin head. Do I just grab at it and pull? Would not want to break it so for the first time I will task he question first...
The car is '87 300TD. Any ideas will be appreciated.
