Turbobenz and his cross country trek.....

Turbobenz, aka Derrick is on a cross country trip. [from California!] Was seeing a buddy in my area and is taking the opportunity to meet fellow Mercedesshop members along the way. So he and his buddy Nathan stopped by this afternoon for a visit.

That is Derrick in the orange-ish shirt along with his 1981 300SD.
What a nice ride he has! The engine bay looks awesome, and there are many components that are nice and shined up. I learned some techniques to get some of mine looking that nice.
The interior of the SD looks great also, and Derrick was nice enough to give me a front dome light assembly with the map light option. Very nice!
Nathan is a good MB dude also, owning a 420sel. Hey, we like gassers here too.
We took a ride in China and Derrick and Nathan took turns driving the poor little mutt. They wanted to experience the fury of 67 horsepower!!
I think both are in the market for a manual tranny 240D, and China was a decent example for them to see what they are like.
Next we went for a ride in the wagon, again both taking their turn. We all love driving other MB's. And with that said, I also got a turn in Derricks SD. It is very nice to drive and S class, and I really enjoyed the nimble handling and smooth power of his SD. Very comfortable seat also!

I thought it was cool to meet another MB Shop member, and it was nice to have them drop by. I think next up is Tyler. They may enjoy somebody who is more in their demographic, but I enjoyed the visit and meeting them. Driving some old German iron ain't so bad either.
I think Derrick will post more of his pics from his trip on this thread. I told him I'd get it started for him.

It was 105 today so that is why the water glasses are everywhere. Poor SD. No AC!!!

They're supposedly showing up Wednesday. I hope Wichita, Ks doesn't overwhelm them.

Perhaps I should let them drive the SL??

It that the SD that Derrick bought for $150.00??? If so he did the engine swap into that car himself. You should see his other diesel(in his avatar) it is sooo Sweet and it runs Like a scalded cat!!!! He passed me on the freeway going to the spring diesel drive at well over 80 MPH. He has a couple really nice cars!

Safe trip on ya Turbobenz.
(you missed a great GTG in LA this weekend for a moderator from Benzworld 126 forum (Ross(420SE) from Australia).

Well, I didn't know if he wanted that out there, but since you mentioned it, yeah, that is the nicest $150 SD you will ever find. Even without the engine and tranny it was worth 3-5 times that much! Awesome deal! And just drives as tight as you would want.
I wasn't 1/4 that sharp when I was 17, and still may not be........
Also, I forgot to mention, that SD comes with an OM617 convection oven. I'll let Derrick explain.....

Hey turbobenz --- that paint color (and condition) looks familiar. Silver and peeling clearcoat on the flat horizontal surfaces, right? Is the interior black? If you detour thru Memphis, I'd love to see your car and meet up with you.

Jimmy --- We should have swapped cars on the way back to Dallas. You could have turned 200,000 on Coda and I could have taken your wagon on a wild "goose" chase. Do you want to know about the "geese" or should I ask RichC?

JIMMYL, you got to drive the SD, But I got to drive his 85 300D. now that is one nice car. nice and tight, fast, quite. Looks like it came out of a time capsule. makes me want to go kick my 85 .

I`ve done my share of cooking on an engine. almost had a can of chunky soup explode. had it on the turbo of a dumptruck. heats em up real good.
Baked potato, wrapped in tin foil, burried in a load of hot asphalt. MMM good.

Have a safe trip Derrick, you are in safe hands with all the members along the way.

I had to take the valve cover off and replace the gasket today becuase it was leaking oil. Weird how I had a feeling I was going to need a gasket, so I brought two. Wish me luck, im probably leaving for denver within a few hours.
