Insurance Premiums for Daily Driver

I'm surprised that my insurance premiums are higher for my '80 Mercedes than for my '95 Explorer (same coverage). I would have thought that the Mercedes would have lower premiums.

Anybody else have this experience. I have GEICO.

Thanks,
bigmaq

What kind of coverage? I would imagine collision would be more expensive. Comprehensive should be way lower.

Yep. Exploder's are fairly cheap to insure. I don't have full coverage on mine, so it's cheaper than the 300td. But even with full coverage I bet that it'd be a similar or cheaper premium.

I hve liability, personal injury protection, and uninsured motorist protection for the 420sel for a grand total of $282 every six months. I figure If I hit someone, its gonna be a total loss anyway, so why pay for the protection to get it fixed?

Because your own insurance company may offer you more to total the car than the other guy's company. The other company doesn't want you as a repeat customer and doesn't care if they low-ball you.

My gf was tagged a few years ago by some kid in a Honda. The Honda was destroyed, but the SD was drivable but totaled. The kid's insurance company offered $1000 for the car, and would not budge from that figure. My gf's insurance company paid more than $3k for the car. She got her deductible back as well, presumably after her company sued the other.

If she had not had comprehensive insurance, she would have had to either accept the $1000 or go to court.

Hmmm. I'm not sure what my insurance company(USAA) would pay for my car, but two years ago progressive gave me 5k for my '82 300SD when my car got totalled. And believe me, it was not in good shape appearance wise.

You mean collision right?

I'll stick to my $55/mo comprehensive coverage plan.

Yeah the Mercedes was considerably more to insure then I had expected...

It was ~$55/month for full coverage and a $250 deductible. I have liability only on it right now (not worth the extra $ for such a cheap car...) and it's still $28/month for a limited use vehicle

Just for reference... I'm 25 years old, use USAA , and have several cars on my policy. I figured they'd give me a break after raping me with $120/month on the Lotus and $180/month on the Lexus. Just for S&G's I got a quote from GEICO to see if the commercials were true... they wanted $340/month for the Lexus and wouldn't even touch the Lotus with a 10 foot pole because it's an "exotic" car

I have USAA too. I have comparison shopped for the heck of it and nobody even comes close. Neither of the two insurance companies I've worked at have even come close, even with the group and employee discounts.

Some states have a thing called Collectors Car Registration. It’s not Historic Car Registration, (QQ plates), and the car only has to be 15 years old. I am allowed to drive it 2,500 miles a year max, but then again I only pay $50 a year for full coverage. Check it out.

I pay about $840 a year for my 300SD....with no collision insurance, but I do have vandalism/theft/act of God/Deer/Glass coverage. It already bought me a new windshield last December after a ginormous rock fell off a truck on my way home from the junk yard (of all places) and smashed it badly. I had only added the coverage 1.5 months earlier! Talk about luck. I also have a $400 head unit in my dash thats covered by that.....so I don't have to worry about it getting stolen.

My dad pays hardly anything on his cars since he has so many. I think he pays like $300 a year for his 300SD!

If I only drove my car to car shows, I would get that.

In CT you get "Early American" plates after 20 years, their are no restrictions and the insurnace companies don't give a damn. The benifit is your taxes go down to about $20 a year. So in the first year I save the $92 they cost me and than some.

I believe that it was comprehensive because she was not at fault. I'm not sure. I never carry one without the other, and let the insurance company sort it out.l
