Four Seasons Rebuilt
I installed a rebuilt A/C R4 on my TD a month ago, that works fine, but is
really noisy. You cannot hear it inside with the windows up, but yesterday I turned the A/C on and my wife stopped me from driving off and said "eww what's that noise?" With the window down, turning the compressor on and off, you could really hear a bad bearing noise or something. I went to the parts shop. They said yeah we'll warranty it. I wish I'd just spent 100 bucks more for a new one. After reading around tonite on various forums, I'll never buy a rebuilt anything A/C again. The A/C has been the biggest PITA on this car. Far more problematic than any single base-line maint. item. When messing with A/C imho go with the best parts the first time.

Make sure the mounting bolts are tight. Sometimes they vibrate out and the spacers start jingling which makes it sound like a bad compressor.

replaced compressor
I replaced the compressor this morning. I suppose I should have done
the R/D as well, but the system was only open for a minute while I swapped out the compressor. I vacced it down for 2 hrs, and re-charged. Real cold, real quiet. Now we'll see in the ensuing couple weeks if it all holds up. I have to do the same to my wife's SD pretty soon, however she's getting a NEW compressor. I wish I wasn't such an obsessive. We don't even need A/C here more than 5 days per year, sheesh, I just like everything to work, even if I don't use it.
