Replacing Water Pump question

I am planning to replace the leaking water pump on my 1985 300TD w123. Can I get away with just draining the coolant from the radiator plug? Or do I also need to drain from the block (would like to avoid? this if possible as I have read it is not easy to get to) Sorry if this is an obvious question.

Thanks!
