finding oil leaks
1986 SDL. I know this is vague but here goes. I spent the day in the shop working on the MB and want to figure out where my oil leak is. The turbo area, alternator, and lower radiator hose are black with caked semi dry oil as is the hose from air box to turbo. Shawn

First you should check the threads as some of the newer cars have some parts under the hood you do not want to get wet!
I have found that the best way to locate a leak is to clean all of that gunk off (at least as much as you can). Otherwise, it is too hard to tell exactly where the leak/s is/are. I degreased my engine X3 with foaming engine degreaser. After which I use a pump type spray degreaser similar to Simple Green every 1-2 Months to keep the oilyness under control. In the case of my car the #1 leak when I bought it was the Valve Cover Gasket. A fter that was replaced all the other leaks have been easy to live with.

I started to clean the engine bay today, the valve cover isn't leaking. I'll continue to clean and see after I run it. Shawn

clean the suspected area and apply talcom powder to the area. Idle the car for a few minutes and it will change color.
