5 Speed Manual Transmission; Should I Do It?
I have access to a 5 speed manual transmission from a parts car (1986 190E, I think). I have been thinking of putting it in a 1979 300SD (5 speed turbo diesel with a 5 speed manual transmission, hehe). I already know about altering driveshaft lengths, etc.
I am wondering if it will bolt up because the starter is on the opposite side! I need to go back out and look to see if the bellhousing allows for the starter to be relocated to the passenger side. I would probably use the backing plate from the 617 diesel engine if it bolts up to the bellhousing, and then use a flywheel and clutch plate from a 200D-240D. I am hoping the pedal assembly and transmission mount will bolt up since it is a different and newer body style than mine. Anyway, it's something to think about. I know the 5 speeds from the W123 body style will bolt up, but I'm dealing with one from a newer body style that has a gasoline engine.

not going to work at all
if it did a lot of us here would be running the same set up... do a search for manual transmission swaps and you will see |

You might be the first to do it.
Given enough resources, that is funds and a machine shop, I am sure it could be accomplished. But it will be difficult swap. The way I see it, and I have a W123 300D and a W124 300 E, is that the name is the same, but still they are a different breed. W123 and W126 with a 617 turbo will share quite a few similarities. But you won't find many if any between W124 gas 5 speed and a W126 diesel automatic. So the only answer to the lack of similarities is "make parts". If you can do that, you could get it done.

Okay, it sounds like it may not be worth the effort in this case. I wasn't sure if the W124 5 speed had changed much from the W123 5 speed. Thanks for the input. Being a 1979, my 300SD is actually the earlier W116 body style.
I did, however, drop a 617 turbo diesel engine into a 1967 230S fintail and it bolted right up to the 4 speed manual transmission without even having to move the transmission. The engine support arms even look like they line up with the cross member. The oil tower gets in the way of the brake booster and shift linkage, so it will need to be relocated. A flywheel and clutch disc from a 220D will be utilized.
