What could it be? 240d - not starting

I am thinking of going to look at a 240d that was supposedly running fine and then just wouldn't start one day.

Apparently, it sounds like it is firing on a cylinder or two, but won't catch and stay running.

What would be all the possible causes of this problem? I assume it wouldn't be a problem with clogged filters, as it is getting enough fuel to fire on a cyl or two.

Valves needing adjustment? Anything else?

Odo is broken, so I don't know the actual mileage, unfortunately.

Probably Glowplugs

Check the glowplugs. Valve adjustment. How much were they asking?

Glow plugs, I don't know why I didn't think of that. He's asking $400...

For $400, I'd tow it home, fix the starting problem, fix the odometer and sell it for $1000+. Don't try to fix it on the spot or he may get second thoughts.

Worst case is it truly needs an engine. $300 from the local PNP, a few hours of work and you could still make a couple hundred off of it.

Well, I want to drive it!

First a car to drive, then a car to make money

It is kind of a far tow and I would have to rent a tow, which complicates things for me and is the only reason I am hesitant.

It is a 79. That would have the loop style plugs, right? Which means if one fails, none of them work?
