OM636 - 180D - 1958 Question

RE: OM636 Engine Crank Bolt-Head Size?
Model 180D
Year : 1958

Hey,

Perhaps this is obscure to a majority on this forum, but I was wondering if anybody can tell me the size of the bolt-head that is on the end of the main crankshaft at the front bottom end? The one I need to put a socket on so that I can turn the engine and see if it moves free?

On a related note, should I expect most bolt-heads and nuts be in metric units, or american/english-inches? This will help me in targeting the socket set I want to get for working on this vehicle.

Thanks Much

Should I get Metric or English/American Socket set?

Thanks Bgkast. No other takers on this one?

Can somebody at least tell me if I need to invest in a metric or american/english set of sockets for working on my oooold mercedes "ponton"....? ('52-'63 I think).

I also have a vintage volvo, and bolts are confusing with that one also... as they didn't use purely metric (swedes) as one might assume.

Thanks.

As far as I know (afaik) the only thing likely to have any SAE threaded fasteners is the air conditioning system. As in those days that was all MBUSA applied aftermarket. Ze rest will be ze metric threads.

Thanks... metric it is....

Yes, metric seems to be what I'm confirming from most of the resources I could find. I already invested in one 27mm socket which worked on the target bolt or nut that I needed it to.

Thanks.

If its Mercedes its metric, the year doesn't matter. Anything SAE is aftermarket. Which since they used AC's from Chrysler or Delco would explain that.

NFW would the Germans use an English system.
