616 blowby VS. 617 blowby
I have a neighbor with two 300TD's. I checked the blowby on them and although the filler cap barely moves, a hefty plume of black smoke comes out.
On my 240D, the filler cap dances around pretty good, but there's hardly any smoke. Anyone care to offer up an explanation?

They're essentially the same engine. Blowby depends on engine wear, it just means yours has a little more. However, my engine has quite a bit of blowby (always has) and yet the past 70,000 miles/5 years it has always started in even the coldest of temps without a heater. So as long as it runs well, don't worry about it....just keep up good oil changes and such.

Air getting past the piston rings.
Nothing you can do about it without spending $4,000-8,000. |

Black smoke? The blowby I have seen is white or gray.

Well, my engine only has 22K on it. I bought it with 16K on it. I'm guessing that it was either poorly rebuilt or improperly broken in by the original owner. I'm happy with it's performance anyway, and looking forward to keeping this California car on the road for quite a while.
