123 240d head work on 115 240?

Are the heads interchangible?

I realize the glow plug holes are different but other than that are they interchangible?

Tom if the casting numbers are the same as those used up till say 79 they should be. Anyone got a casting number for a 240d head off of a 77-79 engine? They still had the large glow plugs.

The actual question is will an 82 head work on the 115 240 engine?

Can someone with the large glow plug size holes in their 77-80 240d go out and post the head casting number? I just had a look before remembering my 79 240d has a newer engine installed with the small glow plug head casting. . I kind of suspect they will be the same as the casting number off the earlier head posted. Prove me wrong someone.

Tom helps out a lot of members. My simpleminded theory is if the large plug heads are the same casting numbers the 82 head would interchange with no problem.

I suspect they will work even if the casting number is different, but I don't want to ship the head to CA if its not for sure!

I appreciate all the posts so far. Carl has his daily driver down until this gets straightened out for him!

The small GP's are the pencil type, while the large is the loop type. He will need to change the GP wiring from serial to parallel as well, if the casting matches.

come on now folks!

I cross referenced parts from the 115 from 1974 and the 123 from '82 and found a lot of the same part numbers...valve adjusting nuts, cam gears, head gaskets, valve seals and guides....all good indicators but no smoking gun so far....

The 240d engine was a carry over to the new 123 body is about the only refference I can find. They just relocated the oil filter etc. on the block as far as I can tell.

Yeah, I think so too, but I'd feel better if someone says they did it or know for sure!
