questions about w123 amg

if I saw a w123 AMG how can i tell if its real? it is all manual, trans windows etc. it has two tone seats and an AMG like steering wheel. did they come with four speeds or is it almost certainly a 5 speed? the levers on the trans go one direction and I was thinking the 5 speed had the reverse lever in the opposite direction? since its a gasser, is this the heavy flywheel? how hard is it to remove the steering wheel?

I believe 5th is on the reverse lever... should have three positions. I think gasser flywheels are different altogether, but I may be wrong. Try cross-referencing using online EPC.

How can you tell it's real. Documentation is best - look on the door jamb and see who imported the car, look on the radiator support and see if there's an AMG sticker. Look at the body kit and see if it's real. Does the suspension sit the car lower? You have to add up all the little things to see if it's a real one.

I used to own a 1984 280E AMG with a 5-speed. The Reverse is down-right and 5th is up-right. It looked like this:

You can email me photos of the one you're looking at, and I'll tell you what I think.

Since you posted this to the diesel forum, I take it that you are looking at a diesel that's touted as having the AMG treatment done to it. It probably isn't. I have been told that no diesels were modified by AMG, engine wise that is. Some may have received the body work treatment, as you could order AMG options a-la carte back then, but those numbers would be very low, as a 240D with a spoiler and rear air dam would look a little silly.

actually it is a gasser. the diesel forum is where my shortcut links......

its a coupe, so quick check says it could not be an AMG. looks like someone was making a euro coupe into a look alike. I got the AMG like steering wheel, metal amg trunk badge, a couple of pieces of burlwood, and a very nice trunk triangle and clip. the coupe manual rear regulators were bad, the cloth interior was trashed, and the body kit was gone or destroyed. the trans is a four speed dang it.

It could've been an AMG. AMG did modify W123 coupes.

Why would you sell that? That would be so cool to own.

the interior was the solid center thin striped edge cloth combination i saw on some vintage AMG ads, that more than anything made me think it might be right. the trunk didnt have extra holes when I pulled off the AMG badge either. the front wheels also looked like a set of honeycomb wheels in the ad. the steering wheel is the four spoke version like POS's above with the four horn buttons but it has a round recess with a badge of some Duetcher wheel maker. there was no AMG marking on the serial plates and I didnt see an extra serial plate. the rear spoiler was completely wrong, the rear and side ground effects looked like 190E parts, the front was torn off. it had a 4 speed not a 5 speed. I would tend to think that its not a real one, but I got all that was valuable that I wanted anyway, the rust was terminal

This sounds like a junkyard find. If it's still there I'd like to see about snagging the four speed and associated parts. Would you mind sharing where it's at?

The flywheel on the 280 is about 18#, IIRC, the 240d about 28#, and a proper 300d flywheel is about 38#.

The 38#er really soaks up the odd vibration pattern of the five cylinder motor. Mine is so smooth at idle you'd swear its a six.

The M110 flywheel is far too light for street use on a 616 or 617.
