What is your source for this?
The maintenance sheet also doesn't mention injectors does it?

I have no source but they certainly should be inspected for damage.

New development

After approximately 200 miles, the knocking got quite loud and now I have significant loss of power. Is that related or is that a different issue? I would have expected the engine to just quit and not to die slowly like this.

For your sake I hope you find a decently priced used engine. Think about getting a rust bucket that runs well, and all the other spare parts that go with it. You'll be able to verify that the engine and transmission are good before you purchase, and then you'll have all kinds of spares, assuming you have a place to store it.

One possible cause of your engine's demise: that blue RTV. MB specifically prohibits it because it can clog the piston spray nozzles and seize the engine. Obviously you don't have a seized engine but something short of that.

Don't worry, I already have my eyes on an engine from a '83 SD. I trust the guy who has it, however, I'll check the VIN and engine number because the instrument cluster is missing and therefore the mileage is unknown. The engine is still in the other car.

That previous post is about two years old

Maybe Alastair will chime in and answer it. In the meantime look at it this way. If you loose a rod bearing you have so much room in that journal there is no way to hold oil pressure. It all gets dumped at that journal, most of it anyway.
