Water Pump 1974 240d

I have been working on this car along time, and am now trying to wrap it up before the cold weather sets in, hate working in the cold,

anyway,

the water pump i took i put on a new seal the one that is like 2 V's stuck together at the top, and put all the stuff back on, i did notice that when i tighted it when i tightened the bolts too tight the part that turns with the blades that turn the water, would not turn, so i backed off of it a bit, and it turned freely.
well since then i have added a radiator, so got to see what happens when water is going thru it, and it leaks.

now i did read a little further in the manual, and it did say to add a sealant, glue, which i didnt do, i didnt read far enough, and i didnt see any evidence that some had been used in the past.

so since it is a fairly big job to take all that stuff off, i have a question
i did get a new set of seals for it, and i bought some of the blue stuff to put on the seals.

my question is about the water pump itself. it doesnt appear to have anything that can go wrong with it, as long as it turns ok. am i right, or is there something else an unknown, that i need to know about.
like is there any other reasons that the water would be leaking there?
besides the seals, mainly that i didnt put the blue stuff on the seals before putting the whole thing back together,

its a pretty time consuming job, and dont want to make any more errors, if you know of anything else i should be looking for pls advise.

thanks in advance

rob

I've never used sealant on that joint and if I recall the gasket is paper thin. I can't imagine you could tighten it enough to cause the blades to bind if the pump were the correct one. I suspect you have the wrong pump or a defective one.

It wasn't clear from your post if you were re-installing the old pump or putting a new one on but if you are installing a new one I would check it against the old one to make sure it looks to have the identical depth where the impeller sticks out.

thanks

thats interesting,

i took it apart since i had the front end off and tried to make sure everything was ok on it and ended up with a problem out of the deal,

i assume the pump i took off was the right one, but u know maybe someone put the wrong one on at some point, that is something i should consider
i can pick one up for 32$ that might be way to verify it is the correct one on there.

i didnt see an sealant on it when i took it apart originally, but i did read in the manual a shop manual, to use sealant on the following page past the mechancal stuff, which i didnt read at the time i was looking at the mechanicals part, and didnt read far enough it does say to add a sealant, and it is possible its the wrong pump, i will keep this in mind.

i was wondering if there was something internal to the pump itself,

thanks,

rob

There are seals on the water pump shaft itself which can leak and are usually what is wrong when a water pump leaks. Either the shaft seal leaks or the bearing can wear out and cause a lot of play in the shaft. Either of those things means you need to replace the pump.
