Question Anyone Know of a Diesel Equivalent to the Visible V8 Models?

I'd like to get my oldest son one for Christmas, if such a thing exists, to go along with his Visible V8 model. It'd be a great learning tool for him, hell, for me as well!

It doesn't need to be a V8 block, just an oil burner.

I used to have one of those! It actually used a motor in the starter housing to spin the engine instead of the hand crank they have now.

I have not seen a diesel variant though...

Lots of engine models, but no diesels that I've seen.

I had one of the electric ones when I was a young 'un. I might try to rig one up so that his will run on batteries, too. It's nice to be able to really move around and watch the innards and not worry about cranking. Or me cranking while he moves around and watch the innards.

Anyone good with modelling, not the glamor kind, and plastic molding?

Here you go ... now you just need a CAD drawing.

I could do a 2-D, non-moving art glass representation. I could even do a decent bas-relief with colored frit and my kiln.

If I could do a working model of a 617 out of leaded glass ... I'd be the most sought after glass artist in the world ... maybe the universe.

If someone wanted to go that route, it might be easier to start with something like this
straight-4 gasser engine model
from haynes. Mod it and have them fabricate the extra parts.

Trying to make a mercedes IDI out of it would probably be difficult, but there's not a whole lot of differrence at the non-running model end of theory between diesel injection and spark plug ignition.

Maybe you shouldn't have.

How much do we need to scrape together to get you started on this project? Keep in mind that most of us are cheap ba$tards!

Mountain out of a mole hill!

The difference would be very tiny. The working difference as seen on a visible model may not even be noticeable. Slightly longer stroke resulting in higher compression ratio (and compression heat based ignition vs spark, of course). All the other funtions would be the same, unless you want to get into a two stroke cycle detroit diesel, which is a different ball of wax. For learning purposes the "standard" visible V8 should be just fine with the added knowledge of the difference

That's true. I wonder if they make a Visible I6? I could probably mod it to a Cummins. Hmmm...
