Diehard used to be outstanding, but they stopped making the Group 93 batteries and now only have a substitute that is a 750 CCA.
123Guy - Thanks!!, this makes me feel lots and lots better about my ($137.00!! ) Megatron Plus 850 purchase.

Redassag00 - The ratings chart you posted doesn't address group 93 batteries. Any chance you could come up with a similar chart for this group? I'm wondering how the Megatron Plus 850 stacks up against the other batteries in this group...

Best bang for the buck now IMO is the Wally World branded (Everstart) Johnson Controls group 49 . I saw one there the other day for $63

Stopped at the M-B dealer, $139 for the battery, plus installation. 10% discount for MBCA.

Figured I'd get the Duralast everyone is talking about, went to Autozone.

Duralast: $79 installed, 850CCA.
Duralast Gold: $130, 650CCA. None in stock.

Advance Auto has their Titanium battery, 850CCA, came off of the delivery truck yesterday, $87 and made by JCI also. 3-year free replacement, 7-year pro-rated warranty. In the car, works great. Would like to have the white one, but not for the extra $50 plus installation, which means sitting around the waiting room spending money, ... another $100 or more for keyfobs and stuff.

The correct size for the MB diesels is Group 93, the Group 49 is a decent substitute, that's why they are cheaper.
That's also why I stopped using DieHard -Sears stopped offering the Group 93 and now try to pass off their Group 49 750CCA as the replacement. That's when I moved to the InterState Megatron 850 - Group 93.

The first battery we used was a Sears Die Hard, got 7 yrs and 5 mo out of it.

second Battery was also a Sears Die Hard. had trouble with that one.
Not sure if the trouble all started when something was left on and drained down the battery, or was something inside it loosened up. was thinking a loose plate.

every once in a while it would leave my wife stranded, get AAA out for a jump. and would place the battery charger on it. took it into Sears for a check since it was still under warranty. said it was good that the Alternator was bad.

Indy said it was putting out ok.

then drove up to Scotts Valley for breakfast at "Chubby`s" one morning and the Damn thing was dead 40 min later.
Just happened AAA was driving by, jumped up and down like a crazy man and got him to stop for a jump.

next block down was "Batteries Plus" and replaced it with their brand of "WERKER". so far so good, and only has 875CCA.
they also said the alternator wasn`t putting out enough. been 2yr 5mo so far. doesn`t get that cold here so the CCA is ok, and don`t plan going to frigid east coast anytime soon.

Don`t know who makes their batteries.

prices haven`t changed all that much over the yrs.

12-24-99 Die hard $108.55

01-25-03 Die hard $118.54

05-18-06 Werker $119.84

alternator "not putting out enough" is typical for these cars, in my '87 and '91 operator's manuals it mentions turning off some equipment if idling for extended periods to avoid draining the battery.

Besides being inconvenient and sub-standard for cars even in the '80s, it is bad for batteries because it often doesn't completely charge the battery, and often goes through a discharge-charge cycle every time you stop at a light or stop sign, ... both of which shorten the life of a battery.

I've upgraded the alternator in my '87, wish I had in my '91 (long gone), makes the lights brighter, windows work faster, battery last longer, blower speed more constant, dash lights brighter, ... A/C works better, many advantages and well worth the hour's work.

I don`t have any problem with the lights flickering when applying the brakes, or turn on accessories. lights are bright etc... haven`t had any problem with this present battery.

I do have a nice shiney 115 amp al129x to install when ever i get off my rear.
