Red Line ATF

Since Mobil 1 changed their formulation and does not include Dexron 3 I've been looking at alternatives, ended up buying Red Line Synthetic ATF Type (D4), it still has Dextron 3 in the description. It's $30 per gallon.
Elf also has fully synthetic Dexron 3 ATF available, but it's hart to find, I've been using their engine oil fr my CDI and it's excellent, already bought 2 gallons for my 87".

Funny, i was at this point 2 weeks ago. I love redline, works great in my 4runner. I will put it in later once I get the shifting issues taken care of. I'm using the cheaper Valvoline 75k hi mileage ATF for now.

I thought you weren't supposed to use synthetic tranny fluid in a MB??

The syn atf should be fine for your 87; but not for the CDI. It would use MB fluid only as it is the ONLY fluid containing the proper friction additives designed for use with that trans. Its a Dex 3 based fluid; not a syn.

What is the cut-off year where synthetic shouldn't be used? I've been thinking about switching over to Red Line also, but I'm not sure if it's recommended or not for my model year.

Proprietary MB fluid came about with the 722.6 trans. That trans, pending model, showed up in 96 or 97.

Lovecr@p is the only one I know of. They say not to change the tranny fluid at all, ever.

In a CDI I would use whatever fluid the 722.6/9 calls for, which is sold at your friendly local MB dealer.
