OM 601 IP Timing
Morning all!
I am putting together an OM 601 and am down to the IP Timing. Unlike the good 'ol OM 617's I dont see a whole lot of threads unless I'm not looking correctly on timing these engines. I know that they require specialized tools unlike the good ol 5 cylinders. I purchased the timing pin 601-589-05-21-00 and think I have located the point where the pin locks in on the pump. I knew which plug to remove but just not exactly what "locked" I rotated the pump around watching and found the high ridge that fits into this locking pin and holds pump from turning. When looking at the pump from the mounting flange, it places the mark on the shaft just to the right of 12:00 (straight up). Now, where do I set my basic timing on the engine? Is this the 24 degrees btdc or is the where I put it at 15 degrees atdc? Everyone seems to have this subject written differently. If anyone can lead me in the right direction or tell me what I need to set the engine at prior to installing the pump... it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help!!!!!! Rick |

It's 15* ATDC #1 (not #6!) for the 602 and 603. Since the 601 uses the same A-B timing light, I'd go with the same setting in the absolute absence of a manual. How'd you get this far into putting together a 601 without a manual?

The rest of the engine is pretty straight forward. Torque values I was able to get from the mitchell manual I have. Unfortunately they are unclear in the IP timming. They show the factory adjustment procedure. I have set it up for 15 degress atdc and am just waiting on the bolt for the pump gear. This car was really tore apart by a well intentioned owner who lost intrest in it and ditched it.
Thank you for the input! Rick |

Bolt for the pump gear? The bolt that holds the IP timer sprocket to the IP? Note that it's a left hand thread.

Yup!!! that's the bolt. And the last owner didnt realize this. Found the bolt in the trunk minus the head. From the looks of it, Benz or Bosch realized most people would not realize this as the head has a very narrow neck that looks like it's designed to break if overtightend or turned the wrong way. Only 5.25 from the dealer. This has been a fun engine to work on. I'll be looking for a vacum diagram next haha.
