engine compartment, 123

i currently have the engine dissasembled on my 87 300TD, i removed the heat shield that goes between the airfilter and the rest of the engine, do i really need to put that back in, all it ever does for me is cause trouble

In addition to shielding the air cleaner and coolant expansion tank from exhaust manifold heat, it also helps direct cooling air around the engine. I don't know how critical it is but as Don and Forced have said, it's there for a reason. I'm curious with Sixto as to what problems it causes for you.

Why, Brian? Because he called it a "123?" I think the heat shield he means is the one I've arrowed in the photo. It can be in the way for some things but I've never had to remove it.

I'm not all that familiar with W124's. Is there a heat shield "between the air filter and the rest of the engine"?

It sounds like the shield that's right below the air cleaner on a W-123.

It sounds like the shield that's right below the air cleaner on a W-123.

In my picture, the air filter goes to the right of the red arrow, over the air intake pipe (black tube with hole). The aluminum piece that the arrow points to is not specifically designed as a heat shield but does block some engine heat, especially radiant heat from the exhaust manifold, trap cat, its later replacement, the turbo, and the down pipe. The air filter case in a W124 is plastic as is the coolant expansion tank. (Both have been removed as part of the work that was going on when I took that picture last year.)
