Fuel injector cleaner question ???
I read an article the other day about dirty injectors, and one reply said something about using "fuel purge" and how it worked great for the guy. Not that I'm having any trouble, but it made me wonder about fuel injector cleaners. I use Lucas injector cleaner every 2-3 tankfuls. I looked for what I thought was the aforementioned "Fuel Purge", but found some Diesel Kleen, which also makes some pretty good dewatering stuff that I use in my Veggie oil Suburban diesel. Question is---What are the opinions of injector cleaners on the market which are fuel additives? How is Lucas compared to others? Is this Diesel Kleen any good? What do all of you think? Thanks for the replies. I'm really curious about this now. Lee

As a fuel tank additive, I use Red Line Diesel Fuel Catalyst (I think it's called). No solvents to soften seals and pollute engine oil.

In the tank I find that using about 1/2 gallon of B100 works wonders. It seems to keep everything clean.
I had been doing a Diesel Purge every six months or 6500 miles but with the B100 used as an additive the injectors stay pretty clean. If you are going to do a Diesel Purge, buy two cans of the stuff, take an empty Lucas bottle or Diesel Kleen jug and cut a hole in the side. then take two two foot lengths of fuel line and connect them to the inlet and return lines going into and out of the engine. Leave the plastic filter on the line going into the IP and simply connect your line to the other end of the filter. pour in your DP and start the car. let it idle for a minute or two then with the jug secured in the engine bay, close the hood and take it for a spin. You have about 15 minutes worth of fuel in the jug, so go around the block a few times gunning it oncein a while. You should see a lot of BLACK smoke coming from the exhaust. When you are done, shut it down and look at the remaining DP. If it has turned black from running through the system, it has done its job. Remove the plastic and main filters and toss, fill the new main filter with fresh diesel or Diesel Kleen and install both it and a new plastic filter. Having the main filter filled saves a lot of priming time.
