Just a tad bummed out today

Took the "91 300D into the shop today with a "smoking issue" that I knew had to do with the head and guess what, # 3 is cracked. Auxilary water pump was leaking, replaced last week, but I guess it got me. Hard to keep an eye on the temp guage every minute you're driving it. Question is I'm definitely going to replace with a NEW but Mercedes wants approx. 2K for a blank head. How is Metric motor able to sell the same item for $1,4000. Is it a made in Mexico or worse China? Car is worth it to me to repair the right way. Any suggestions? Thanks

i think metric remanufactuers the heads and you'll need a core or to send yours in. Thats how their so cheap, their not brand new.

Nope, they don't have a rebuild on the 602, just a "new" head. I would do this job myself, but just recently got transfered with my job and I'm 100's of miles away from home. Do believe I brought a srewdriver with me.

There was rumoured the availability of a spanish aftermarket new afterrmarket head about a year ago for 800.00 bare. No member that I can remember availed themselves of one. You should be able to find the postings about them in the achiuves.

Based on the Jan 2008 price list, 602 010 81 20 has a list price of $1970 and dealer cost of $1180. Metric doesn't have another source of MB heads, just a better discount than you get.

Don't forget to check with Phil.

Mechanic questions if rod could be bent. Crack at #3 in the head. Exhaust gas was entering cooling system. Car was running on 4 cylinders and smoking pretty good. When you would get up to 30 or 35 mph cylinder would kick in and car ran smoothly, no smoke. My question is it possible the pressure in that cylinder could have bent a rod? Thanks

Possible but that engine isn't known for bending rods.
