Knocking in my engine

Ever since I bought my car it has had a knock. I have done nothing to it do to the fact I always thought it means the engine had a big issue. Which translated in to high dollar repair.

I brought my car in to have my transmission adjusted and they noted on the sales slip Knocking motor,Transmission worn out. They did a great job adjusting my transmission but I do know in the future I will have to get it rebuilt maybe.

On to the engine knocking. Every thread I read on engine knocking, points to a rod bearing issue is this what it most likley is? Also if I were to get this repaired how much could I expect to pay?

The knocking is rythmic and consitent with a warm or cold engine. Oil pressure gauge is always pegged when driving. I didn't see and metal at all when I did my last oil change.

If this is your first Diesel you will find it makes a few new, and potentially alarming, noises. The first time my Mom started her brand new 1971 220D in a giant garage at the Munich MB dealership she shut if off right away and asked the mechanic at her disposal what happened (when you take delivery in Germany, at least in the old days, a multi-lingual mechanic goes over every design and operating detail of the entire machine with you, until you are satisfied and comfortable enough to take delivery and operate the vehicle on your own). The guy had to stifle a laugh and explain to her the noises of a Diesel are different compared to a spark ignition engine (and went into a dissertation on why) and they can be alarming. The echo chamber that the garage turned out to be made things worse than they normally would be outside, as did the December delivery date.

Rod bearing failures are usually accompanied by oil pressure problems as the rod bearings are one of the first oil consumers and if the clearances are too large the oil pressure is lost as the oil spews out the clearance. So, good oil pressure is a sign of not having a rod bearing problem. And the noise, well, if you recorded it and posted the recording you might get an opinion on what it is that might be true. But I wouldn't count on it. Does the engine shake on its mounts (failed engine mounts can lead to alarming noises)? Is the air cleaner fastened down tight (little rubber mounts fail, causing problems)? Lift the hood and listen around for where the noise is coming from. The shaking of the engine can lead to all kinds of other stuff rattling and clunking as well.

So, the point is, the noise may not be the song of impending death. Jim

If the MB guys said that they probably know the difference between "normal diesel sound" and a "problem" sounding knock. Could be bad news. Is the car nice, good body, interior?

It has 180,000 miles. I love the car!

I will have them take a look at it next weekend. I wonder how much it would cost just for a diagnoses.

It seems like the shop may have exaggerated both the "transmission worn out" and "knocking engine." They adjusted the transmission, afterall, and by your account, it is working properly, correct? I wouldn't assume the motor is toast. Maybe visit dieselgiant.com and listen to some a/v of some cars. It'll give you a good comparison. I thought my car had an unusual knock (and it does compared to my friend's SD with a rebuilt motor), but it sounds very much like most others that have 200k + miles.

You said oil press. is pegged when driving. What is it at idle? Also, do you have any smoke?

At idle it has 2 bar. When driving fully pegged. No smoke comes from the exhaust.

Those numbers sound pretty good. Btw, what's your idle rpm? Have you put enough miles on the car to observe any oil useage?

Mercedes Source says,a flex plate on the flywheel can fool the best mechanic to think its a rod. Also crank pulleys need to be checked.

pistons and valves

is it simply possible that the valves are hitting the pistons due to a tooth skip maybe i think dad's 240D had that problem too maybe you could turn the crank shaft 2 times and check

New nozzles?

I just saw a YouTube thing about a knocking engine. They changed the car to Bozio nozzles and it ran smoother. Maybe your nozzles are all gummed up?

It could be a bad nozzle. Loosen the high pressure lines one at a time to identify the bad injector.
