Durable Replacement Key Alternative offer

I am putting my answer here because there is a video in the signature of a member in the other thread and it pretty much blocks me from getting to the latest answers..

I got spare keys made here in the Central Texas area by a mobile keysmith..that met me with her van in the HEB parking lot... and made a bunch of spare keys for honda,lincoln,gate,house... AND my 240d....
The cost of the 240 keys was not much more , if any, than the others... I had read about these $20 plus dollar keys at dealers ....
She also said she could make them with just the right numbers I believe...
but I never trust that unless it is an emergency...
I will find her name and number and post it...
Or , I might agree to a bunch of people sending their keys to me and me getting her to make the copies...
Greg

Guy with video on signature.... please don't post to this thread so I can come back and check what is said.. thanks.

What browser are you using? On IE there is a setting that stops animated files from running.

Security warnings? No offense, but I think your connection is too slow to even get hacked. Besides your just surfing on M-shop it is a safe site. You should use IE because you can configure it easily. Firefox (which I use also), I have the foggiest idea of how to turn off an animated web file.

I think I got it for Firefox. Try pressing the "ESC" key once you get in a thread. This should stop all animation and hopefully not the rest of the page for you.

Another solution for Firefox is go to tools - options - content - and unclick "load images automatically" This would just give you all text and with option to see the attachments. All other images are not available.

I doubt most mobile locksmiths can cut steel keys. They're probably ilco or Axxess Brass blanks.

Order a new lock cylinder kit from your dealer, comes with a new key too!

Here's my original key. No brass evidence anywhere!

I am sure they are steel....
I have no idea why anyone would think that a grinding wheel would have any trouble cutting steel....
I do not think they have the rubber.. but will look...
but it seems like for $6 bucks or so you could dip the end into that ' rubber handle' dipper stuff and make your own rubber back end....???
Instead of the outrageous prices I have seen quoted...
This would involve sending the key/s with a stamped return address box inside the box sent to me....
Everyone that thinks they might be interested PM me...

When I got my 300D, it came with only one key. I went to the Ace Hardware store on the corner, and they had blanks and cut steel keys for me for under $2 a piece. They work just like the one factory key.

The steel looking blanks you see at many locksmith kiosks or pro locksmiths are actually brass coated with some other silver metal. My "steel" key has started to wear down after a few years and you can now see the brass underneath.

I've called every pro locksmith in my city - none have steel keys. If provided with a real steel blank, they will not cut it. It would damage their machine.

My 300TD came with a "steel" key from the PO. Eventaully the shavings destroyed the tumbler, causing me to buy a new one.

It's not worth destroying another tumbler for cheap "steel" keys.
