Got a 1977 240 D today.

1977(10/76 Mfg. Date so 1977 MY per emissions sticker on door jamb). US , NOT California, version. 040 Black, 240 D, Manual Transmission,
182,000 miles and the speedo works.

I'll be bringing her the 2 miles home in a few days as PO needs the time to clean out his belongings and hopefully sweep her out.

She needs a good cleaning up. Manual seats and windows, no sunroof, steel wheels with bright,( not chrome) MB hub caps, not painted. Recent new windshield
She needs some TLC. PO says the Vacuum pump needs to be rebuilt. Runs , but will not shut off. PO tells me she likes to cruise at 70 MPH on the freeway. Recent new clutch.

Radiator support tag shows606G Maple Yellow......If this car has been repainted 040 Black, then there was a very thorough job as the engine bay and inside of door jambs, etc and everything I can see was is 040 Black. Interior was Palomino I believe, but interior was redone in Mexico by a former owner. Interior is now Black Vinyl or Naugahyde.

I wonder if the engine was changed out and the donor Rad. Support Plate added. However car seems to have the rest of the options stated on the plt. and no extras.....Hmmmm Simply Hmmmm.

I cannot get a build card off EPC on this car. VIN 12312310012941

Not many options.
467 Central locking and Instruments in English
491 US Version
515 Becker Europa MW/USW=Usa Radio(replaced with a later stereo)
542 Lockable Glove Compartment
580 Behr A/C (compressor is nearly as big as the 4 cylinder engine.....)
593 Green heat insulation glass with heated rear window.
636 Elimination of Warning Triangle.

She's been sitting here a little while, moved around the driveway to reposition cars so she's very dusty and dirty.
Very straight body, All doors need to be adjusted to close properly.

I do not have a name for her yet,

Congratulations on your purchase!

Two things I notice in the photos:

1. I don't see jackpoints on the left side. Is this just the photo resolution?
2. Why are both right side doors looking not shut?

Cheers

Not shutting off is not a symptom of a failed vacuum pump as long as you still have power brakes. Could be a leak or a failed shut off valve.

Yep that is what I am thinking. owner said the vacuum pump needed to be rebuilt, but he doesn't appear to know a lot about the car, even though he has owned it for several years. Not a mechanical type of hands on guy.
I'm hopping for vacuum leaks or bad shutoff valve.
They have a 300 D that is experiencing Modulator problems and when He told me the symptoms I ask if he had checked the Modulator valve or vacuum leaks and he didn't know what I was talking about.

Hoping for the best.

looks like a nice example - It always surprises me how people can own these cars for such long times and not know how to maintain them.

I got mine for $500 - it hadn't run in "months" he said - the gas in the tank says years. In any case I had it running in 3 days. I drive it to work now.

When I got my car, my rear door was like yours. It did not want to shut right.
I cleaned and lube -ed all the doors, they work much better now. Had to open and close them quite a few times but it worked

Your 240D is the finest kind...no power wind-ers or sun roof to cause you headaches. 4 speed to boot! get her cleaned up and post some more photos!

Chadahar, good luck with the car

Go visit your Mercedes parts department, and they will help you find the correct chassis and model for the EPC net

Better pictures today.

Had some time this afternoon, so I went back and took some better photos of the 240 D. Rad Support Build Plate IS original to the car. Upon closer examination the car has been repainted 040 Black. She was Maple Yellow with Palomino interior once upon a time. However her seats have been redone and they are almost perfect, albeit, not MB stock, pattern is close and it is a good job.

I got some better photos:

Passenger side door is the worst about closing. Got them all closed correctly, but pass. front

Engine compartment pictures.

Talked to the PO some more today. and he was told that he needed the
Vacuum pump rebuilt or replaced(still braking good) and that it needs an injector replaced as the reason it was running rough. I'm thinking vacuum leaks.

Can't wait to get her home and cleaned up a bit. She'll be used as my DD to go to my clients, but I may take her on a GTG as soon as I can get her lined out. She isn't going to ever be very pretty, but I hope function over aesthetics will be her calling.

Aside from being in severe need of cleaning, it looks like a nice find. How much did you pay? I got mine for $480, but it wasn't in as good cosmetic condition and needed a slave cylinder. Does the AC work? I see it still has a belt on it.

Looking at the under hood pictures, I think your vacuum line routing may be off. It's been a while since I sold my '77 though, and I'm used to looking at my '83.

Po gave me the car, but I will help him with their 300D that needs some minor attention, like a window that will not roll up, etc.

Your vacuum hoses look like they are in the right place for a 77 240D from what I can see in the pictures.

Can't beat free.
