Check out my MB Hubcap Clock

I've wanted a Hubbie clock ever since I first saw one. So I bought a set of hubbies and made clocks out of them. Here's mine:
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...r/MB_Clock.jpg

I still have three others if anyone is interested. They have the patina of actual road use.:D I put good quality clock works in them that use a AA battery which I'll include. I painted the hands orange so they look like gauge needles.

I'd like $45 (via Paypal) which includes the cost of shipping to anywhere in the continental US. PM me if you want one. When these 3 are gone, that's it.

Here are pics of the other three I have:

Sweet! Is that official gauge indicator orange? What would you charge to install a clock if someone mails you a hubcap?

Do they keep good time when installed in the car? :D

:D It's just a neon orange I found at Home Depot. It's pretty close.

If you send me a hub cap I'll ship it back to you with a clock in it for $25 including shipping.

Biodiesel300TD 12-23-2008 10:02 PM

Those are pretty sweet!:D

There has been a set on the Portland CL for quite some time that they want like $150 for. Good luck selling those. Keep an eye on CL though, they are on there all the time.

JimmyL 12-23-2008 10:22 PM

I love the concept! I remember seeing them from some GTG pics I believe. But for some reason the orange hands don't work for me. Seems like they almost need to be chrome or silver. I need to look for the pics from the GTG. Seems like they were on somebody's windshield......

It was from the Central FL GTG I attached the pic. I didn't care for the shorter hands or the numbers. IMO the holes in the hubcap rim indicate the numbers well enough.

Wait, so my still shiny hubcaps are worth $150?!!?

Only if you don't want to sell them. They usually go for somewhere around $40 in my neck of the woods.

Chadahar 12-23-2008 11:19 PM

Let's see, Run a Centra Wheel through the band saw.....and ship it to.......Naw too heavy, but a heckofa idea though....

JimmyL 12-23-2008 11:48 PM

I don't guess anybody has one spare green hubcap, do they?? :o:o
My clock guts have been ordered.....

Chad300tdt 12-23-2008 11:52 PM

I'm down to 2 clocks. Once they are sold it's like mine was free.

If they don't sell in a few days, I'll put them on ebay for a bit more and make some profit in addition to getting mine free.:)

EDIT: Speaking of time ... 7 minutes and it's Christmas Eve on the east coast!!!! Merry Christmas Eve everyone. :)

blk90s13 12-24-2008 12:20 AM

merry christmas to you too, now be nice and send me a clock free :D

Those must have been some expensive numbers [1-12] I think I prefer the numberless version.
Those clocks did look good, though. You just have to find that correct market value.....;)

I have four of them, but they are all on my car.

You could always strip one down and repaint it your favorite Caladonia Green color, and send the rest of the paint to me so I can repaint mine:D

Believe me, when I think of the perfect MB green, your little 240D is what pops into my thought bubble......
It's a good thing for you that you live so far away.....:sneaky:

Do you want blue or red ?? I have both. An no, that is NOT china blue; we've had that discussion before, right?

iwrock 12-24-2008 02:27 AM

Chad300tdt 12-24-2008 08:55 AM

All gone!! Thanks guys.

vstech 12-24-2008 09:08 AM

Ive got 3 sets of hubbies... pastel blue, creme yellow, and sandy silver... I forget the correct correct terms... I'd like to let the yellow ones go, and perhaps the blue ones... assuming the guy getting my TD wants bundts.

pizzachef 12-24-2008 11:08 AM

Darn, being out of town limits my forum time, missed out on the clocks!
Well, if you do another run, I'll try to catch one then. Unless I come across a hubcap somewhere, then I'll try it out myself.
Will you share the info on the clock innards or is that proprietary info :)

Well if it disappears I will know who to go looking for!:bangin:

...and you'll be pickin' up your teeth with broken fingers.!:D:P

bgkast 12-24-2008 05:11 PM

Clever, but I don't know if I could bring my self to drill a hole in a hub cap. I'm an obsessive collector of pastel blue hub caps. I currently have 11. :D

MTUpower 12-24-2008 06:34 PM

red or creme

Keep an eye out for a few China Blue while you're at it! ;)

JimmyL 02-08-2009 01:07 AM

Well, I finally made my first Hubbie Clock today. I of course started with a green hubbie although it isn't really the green I was hoping for. [thanks to H-Town for this hubbie though. Good one to start with]
I'm not as happy with the color of the hands as I would have hoped either, but you gotta start somewhere. Perhaps a second hand of a different color, maybe Chad's red.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...ieclock001.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...ieclock005.jpg

without camera flash

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...ieclock004.jpg

This of course isn't its final resting place, just a bit of open wall to get an idea. I imagine the wife will have it banished to the garage....

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...ieclock006.jpg

Was very easy to make. I simply used a punch and hammer to start my hole in the center, then just enlarged drill bit sizes until I hit 5/16. Waxed and polished the hubbie then installed clock guts and the hands. Took about 15 minutes I guess....

JimmyL 02-08-2009 10:01 AM

Found it laying in the middle of my desk this morning with the old clock back up on the wall.
Out to the garage it goes..........:(

Chad300tdt 02-08-2009 10:29 AM

Looks good Jimmy. Sorry you can't hang it in the house.:(

Here's a few more I just made.

This one is daw's:
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...s/dawClock.jpg

This one is TheDon's:
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...BundtClock.jpg

This one is my fintail clock. I think I'm going to hang it in my glass studio:
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...s/FinClock.jpg

I'm making 11 more like daw's clock (some blue, some red, some unpainted) and 3 more like TheDon's. I'll post them all when they're ready to ship to potential owners.

TheDon 02-08-2009 10:39 AM

The Bundt Version is a limited edition version :)

JimmyL 02-08-2009 02:59 PM

Wow, that Bundt version looks best of all. I really like the red hands on that one. Certainly looks better as a clock than on a car.......

Chad300tdt 02-08-2009 05:34 PM

The hands on all the clocks I've made have been "glow orange". The flash and angle of the shot seems to alter the color in my pics.:(

I guess I should really be setting up controlled light shots on a solid background. In reality, the color is closest to the bundt clock's hands, but not quite as red.

daw_two 02-09-2009 10:16 PM

better pic ????

Hey Chad!!!

This "might" be a better pic of my clock. Now, IF my "painter" (aka wife) will get my office painted a better color.....

http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...f/DSCF3710.jpg

Oh, wait. Maybe, Jimmy, wants this wall color.

I might have to trim the hour hand a bit though --- I get confused on the time, sometimes. I really LIKE the sound of it, though.

It was a very nice surprise when I got home last night from The Parthenon.:D

JimmyL 02-09-2009 10:19 PM

My clock guts are not working correctly. I am not pleased......

Chad300tdt 02-09-2009 10:24 PM

COOL!! I'm glad it got to you safely daw.

I trimmed the hands for my fintail clock with a tin snips. It worked great. I tried a pair of dykes first and they didn't work great.:D

What's happening Jimmy?:( You didn't try to adjust the time by spinning the hands did you?

Make sure the hands aren't bent and binding every time they pass over each other.

The hands were bent a little in shipping. I might have to teach you how to pack these things. Good try, though.

Adjust the time by spinning the hands? Isn't that the way you do it? I did.

There's a little dial on the back of the clock works that you use to set the time.

I thought for sure that those cardboard wedges would keep them safe.:(

There not binding, but as the minute hand works past 12 and starts down it will all of a sudden drop, like the drives slip. It isn't the hand slipping it is the mechanism. And no, I didn't move it with the hands. It also stopped today with the second hand just bouncing in place. Again, no binding or overlapping of the hands and the battery had 1.599 volts.
Will swap in my second clock guts and see what happens.....
And daw, almost half of the inside of my whole house is painted pea soup green. I like it on MB's, not so much on the walls......

My office is more this green I think. Came in our house and wife is working full time, so she doesn't have time to paint. Before she went back to work, there were lots of days, I would come home from work and get lost in the house ---- walls were different color than when I left to go to work in the morning.

Oh, yes. As I matter of fact, those folks that have received packages from me, can thank charmalu (Charlie) here for teaching me the hot glue, cardboard, and tape tricks. I'm a quick learner in some categories.

Chad300tdt 02-10-2009 08:15 AM

daw,

I think I'll make more cardboard wedges and hot glue them to the flat piece of cardboard that I used like a lid inside the box. The wedges must have shifted in shipping and allowed the hands to touch that flat sheet of cardboard.

Thanks for the feedback and the reminder of how you packaged the console.

Charlie,

Thanks for the compliments and for passing on your packaging knowledge.:D
I've got plenty of things (hubcap clocks and cup holders) I have to ship in the near future and I'm open to all suggestions and advice.

did you send me something one time? I remember getting a box with empty, clean 1 liter bottles as packing material.

I just use packing peanuts, $20 for a 20 cu foot bag. I blew threw 3 of those last week packing out ebay parts.

No that wasn`t me. Didn`t think about the plastic bottles. thanks for the idea. Trash bins and waste baskets debris works too .
Time for some spring cleaning. :D

I have had to get creative a time or two.
