AC Compressor swap?

I have an 87 300 TDT and yesterday I removed the compressor to repair a clutch bearing (not easy to get out) Anyways turns out it was the comp. squealing and not the clutch. It must have failed and locked on so the comp was turning all the time. I took it apart and removed the magnet and key from the shaft and reinstalled. (the clutch was also cooked) It works fine now with no noise. My question is, Denzo makes AC Comp for all different makes and models. Are they not virtually the same except for mounting? Would a compressor from a 300E not fit my 300 TDT wagon? What would be different? They look identical.

Considering how long they have been making compressors, it's quite unlikely that they are internally the same. Similar, sure. They all pump refrigerant. One big difference is that older compressors are fixed displacement, whereas many newer compressors are variable displacement.

Swapping from a E to a D of similar years should be just fine if the mounts are the same. You could look for the presence of the bellows in the low side (back end of the case) to indicate variable displacement. It will be about 1" in diameter, just below flush with the outside of the case, and held in with a circlip.

I would think that the compressor would bolt to different mounts so maybe that would work, pulley should be about the same.

sizes or capacities?

I replaced the nippondenso compressor on my 87 SDL. It seems there was a different designation for some of the cars, even in the same year. I believe they may have put a slightly smaller one on the diesels to lessen the load. The designations were something like xx-xx17 for the gas motors and xx-xx15 for the diesels. Probably all the same design and case within that family. Check to be sure though.

The Adsit catalog says the 87 is a split year for 300D/TD AC compressors. Early ones have a compressor interchangeable with the 300E (all years) and the 300SDL. Later ones are interchangeable with the 300D 2.5 and 124 E300.

My guess is you'll be fine with a 300E compressor.
