What happend to this GLOW PLUG??

My friend has a 240 with 120k on the clock....car is clean and nice and USE to run well.

He said it didnt start right and the gps were fine so he tried to time it but messed it up.

i checked the timing and even removed the ip and checked it with the harmonic balancer and the cam shaft and all is spot on but it still was having starting problems.

Removed the gps and one was almost completely gone (gotta love Auto Lite) and the others were Beru. So he told me he replaced them and it was better but still not as good as before. Well i guess he used some Beru and some Bosch.

Well here is a Beru we pulled out tonight that was in the same hole and the Auto Lite that was GONE.

The picture speaks for its self but i have never seen this and there is no funny noise or anything......so anyone got any ideas whats doing this?

?

Were the GP holes reamed before installing new GP's? I'm thinking it may have been tight in there and the end snapped off. Just a guess.

I've seen an "Auto Lite" GP (loop style) destroy a 616 engine when the tip fell off and part of it came to rest on top of the piston. Auto Lite=BAD

Is the impingement ball or whatever it's called still in place in the pre-chamber?

How exactly would the tip have fit through the tiny holes at the bottom of the prechamber? Seems unlikely.....

I dono, it doesn't have to be a very big piece with the clearance there is, the MB mechanic showed me the damage and the broken plug from that cylinder. I'll ask him about that when I see him next.

Remember that glow plugs have nothing to do with the way the car _runs_. Only with the way it starts. So if the car is not running well after it starts and is warmed up, it's not the glow plugs!

A "blown out" gp in the prechamber probably can change the way the car runs even hot

The auto lite one was GONE gone....and a buddy whos a MB mechanic said the engine will just eat them because the tips are soft metal and made to do that.

Well he was talking about a bosch one so who knows right?

Every time he messed with the ip even when i set it he was the one later to install it so im hoping it just isnt timed right this last time, but it was right before so i have no idea.

hes got a euro 240d M style pump he wants to use but i told him to make sure its running normal before going through all the bull.

Ill keep everyone up to date but whats making the gps do this i wonder?

So i learned tonight that my buddy has some injectors with Audi tips in them that his other friend thinks are better and gave him.......thing is he pop tested them but did not calibrate them and when i talked to him tonight he doesnt remember what they pop at.

For the hell of it i put a euro 4banger M pump of a euro spec 82 240D and the thing started cold on ONE tight injector and the others off as i was putting them on. I was just having him turn it over a couple times while i made sure the fuel came out. So the it runs OK an and starts really EASY but it still has this hickup which will get better when warm but its still noticeable.

You guys thinking bad injectors and fuel knock too? Maybe some way thats what is making the gps in that chamber get too hot.

He also said the exhaust seems alot more hot then his last 240D when all this started but is a lil better now.

SO hes gonna change out the injectors with good old stock 240D spec ones and ill keep everyone up to date.
