Had 240D.. thinking about 300CD
Hi,
I lost my mint 240D in an accident recently and it's a total loss. I'm thinking about a replacement and the 300CD caught my eye. But I'm not familiar with it so I'm looking for some feedback on it. I liked my 240D manual because it was simple and reliable and I like the design. I like the 300CD for the style so far, is the engine similar to a 300D ? Are there issue about it ?

They share the same engines as the 300D.
-81 Non Turbo, -82-85 Turbo 5 Cylinders. Body parts are harder to find, as the coupe chassis was imported in far fewer numbers than the sedan. The main difference with your 240D in terms of reliability would be the auto transmission. Once you get the hang of tuning it (vacuum, bowden cable, etc), it shouldn't give you any problems. One more cylinder, otherwise.

So that the 300CD does not come in a turbo ?
Is there a typical mileage that the auto tranny needs to be rebuilt ? cost ?

I have a 1983 300CD and love it, its a very unique car, mine has 336,XXX on it almost 337,000 and still does great. Still has the original transmission. Just remember as soon as you buy the car replace the trans fluid and filter and rear diff fluid. As was stated before the 80-81 are non turbo the 82-85 are turbo models

In addition to the issues with all w123's, the CDs commonly have issues with the window regulators. The windows are so big that they wear them out quickly. I have to replace the bushings in mine too. The windows start operating slowly and when more worn, require a little help going back up.
Just something else to check. It's all fixable, but the rear windows require the removal of the back seat to get to the regulators. Parts are more rare, but obtainable. EDIT: I get looks in both my w123s, but people actually walk up to the CD to ask about it. It definitely gets more attention. ![]()

I'm not sure soon I would be ready for a new car but what do you guys think about this car. It looks like a real beauty in that color:

Too pricey to be in that condition.
For 5500, you should get something that's going to need less work than that one. Any of these cars, even the best examples, will need work. So budget a couple grand in to any car purchase for repairs (and sooner rather than later)...

I agree. The interior is pretty beat for that much and the dent in the fender means body work or a new fender and paint.
I know I got a good deal on mine at $3500, but there are others out there too. I've been seeing GREAT w123's for under $4000 lately. Here's the album of my CD: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/members/chad300tdt-albums-1985-300cd-turbodiesel.html I bought it from the second owner who bought it in 1986 and it came with complete maintenance records and FSMs. Everything works, no cracks in the dash and I've put minimal effort into it since I got it. I've spent about $500 in parts to bring some things up to par, and I'm currently working out an issue with the heat that recently developed. I'll probably have to re-solder the CCU. My point is like UriahT is saying. You're going to need to have some cash for maintenance. Stuff goes wrong with 20+ year old cars ... even the ones selling for more money and currently have no problems.

I would stick with a 240D or manual Euro 300. I like MANUAL trannys, heating systems and windows plus theres allot of "CD particular" parts that are too heard to come by. Bottom line for me, I don't care for auto trannys, neither does my wife, thank god

Chad and Uriah are exactly correct, so ditto on their comments. 300CD's are sought after especially outside the States, since they were only produced for the US-market. If you get one in pristine or will-be-restored condition, then focus on keeping it long-term since their values and desirability can only go up!
The Orient Red one linked above is also currently on eBay... while it's a workable example the price is just a tad on the high side especially since the dash is hideous, but at least it seems rust-free for the most part.... and there's a premium for that.

Wow, only in the US. I do love the look of them but the lack of parts and the premiums for having a rare car might scare me off. But when we talk about parts specific to that car, is it mostly interior since the engine is mostly a 300D ? What kind of parts that is difficult to find ?

The SDs were the US only cars. CDs were sold elsewhere too.

well as stated the windows have problems because they are heavy and I would assume the window glass is hard to come by as well. I have not had any problems finding anything as far as engine wise goes but maybe others will be able to help you more. I would personally go with a 300D if the CD seems like a bit to much for you.
