:bigcry: Its one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen!:o A combination of my two most favorite vehicles in the world. Mercedes benz and old Chebby pick ups. Great job man - Cant wait to see it done!

Glad to see someone else doing swaps using MB engines. I have a 53 F100 that I swapped in a 617 from a 81 300SD and love it. Here's a link to my gallery on FTE with quite a few build pics: http://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gallery/displayalbum.php?&userid=308002&albumid=19458
Are you planning to swap the rear-end gears? That truck with a six cyl and 4 speed should have 4:11 gears, that'll be quite low for highway running. I'm running 3.25s in my truck.
Also check out the pic for another idea for connecting the driveshaft to the MB trans.

Nice looking job. The lines of the classic 53 ford come through strong and clear even with the scruffy paint!;)

Your chevy is coming together nicely as well! Compliments to the chef!

Before long it will look like this! :D

Very good work. I have thought of this swap myself as I have two 67's and a 68 but they are all duallies. Somehow I think I would not be too happy with the power to weight ratio.

What really sucks is I just picked up that TD that has body damage.
I would have swapped him for the 116:o.

Then he would have even had a SLS for the truck:rolleyes:.

Ditto...looks excellent. I think I'll enjoy seeing the end product and hearing the stories of how it drives, etc...but I'm really enjoying the fabrication and what it's taking to get the job done.

Well done!

Whatcha got under the hood on that thing?

There is something not quite with that pickemup. I abso-friggin-lutely love it! Yell at me when you are coming to San Antonio. Or if you need a hand to hold your beer... I got grounded from power tools for a year...

well, I
finally got around to doing some photoshop (actually, gimp) work on some torque curves I have, so now I can compare the power of the engines.

this is the data I have on my chevy 292 inline 6 cylinder (from the free GM "restoration packet"):

http://jason.pepas.com/photos/oddsandends/292.jpg

facts of note:
* dry weight: 561 lbs
* peak power (at flywheel): 170 hp @ 4000 rpm
* peak torque (at flywheel): 275 ft lbs @ 1600 rpm

this is the data I have for the OM617, which I found somewhere on the internet:

http://jason.pepas.com/photos/oddsandends/om617a.jpg

so, doing a little bit of scaling, shearing and rotation, we can line these up. unfortunately, each graph uses different scaling between the power and torque, so we have to produce two images: one where power is to scale, and the other where torque is to scale.

first, torque. google claims that 200 NM is about 147.5 lb ft, so I tried to line those marks up as closely as I could. again, only pay attention to the torque curves in this image. the power curves are not to scale.

http://jason.pepas.com/photos/oddsan...292-torque.png

now, we scale according to power. google claims that 100 kW is about 134.1 hp, so I tried to line those up. in this image, only pay attention to the power curves.

http://jason.pepas.com/photos/oddsan...hevy292-hp.png

so, it definitely won't be as powerful as before, but I think it will work out fine.

project 617 gm finishing up

Ok, now what are you looking at to address the finishing details like the Vacuum shutoff switch? I have often wondered this when pondering a 617 in my old 30's GMC. how does the vacuum shutoff switch work--in the ignition switch. You will have the chevy switch--or replace it with a napa forklift/ tractor type switch. the benz switch--Does it open the swich---pathway to regular air pressure or visaversa--to full vacuum to shut off the IP. The Chevy wont have the feature built into the key switch. When I used to work for Honest John's Caddy Corner in Justin Tx I learned about the 60's models had a vacuum trunk lock switch,, Tranz ams had them to But did they opperate on the same principle? can you just have one of these to serve the same function? and what about all the other gismos on the fender wells that need to be tranz planted. That compareson of the 292 to the 617 shows once again we think along the same lines, I have both sitting around and have been trying to decide which to use in my 39 WWII GMC COE thats now sitting on 1 ton stepvan suspension.
