project "GM Benz" has begun...

I'm working on putting an OM617 into my 1967 Chevy half-ton pickup (C10).

So far, I've gotten the OM617 positioned where I want it and have fabricated engine mounts.

Here are a few teaser photos. More to come as I have time (also, time-lapse videos!):

Remaining things to do:
* fabricate transmission cross member
* have custom driveshaft made
* address the fuel tank
* decide on sticking with the stock GM radiator or cutting up my core support and using the merc radiator(s).
* fabricate radiator overflow tank bracket
* plumb existing GM heater core into merc coolant system
* fabricate battery mount
* address ignition / wiring issues
* chop and hang the merc exhaust system

I'm liking this, and am very interested to see how it turns out. So, does this make it a Chevrocedes? Or maybe a Mercerolet? Heh. I couldn't resist.

How much does that truck weigh in comparison to the donor car? Oh, and how are you going to do the shifter?

I like it.

How much is this going to weigh compared to the W116?

WOW! What a cool idea! You gonna leave it stock or do some mods to it?

Even got the propeller shaft and center bearing!

The weight as listed on my truck title was like 3650 lbs (it had a straight six and manually 4 speed, no A/C, no electric anything, so it was about as light as they come), so the 300SD is actually several hundred pounds heavier than the truck.

As for the shifter, at least for now, I'm going to reach down into the gaping hole in the floor and move the shifter arm back 3 detents

I really liked the smooth action of the mercedes shifter though, so at some point I'm going to fabricate a custom "hump" cover for the truck which will somehow incorporate the original mercedes shifter.

hahaha its better then i could ever do!

what are you using for a driveshaft? Is it just a regular piece of pipe? How about the adapter plate where it mates to the Mercedes flex plate, what is it?

I see the piece of pipe is just being used to mock up the angle of the driveshaft so that the engine and tranny can be mounted in line with the rear end. I did something like that when I dropped a small block in to a Chevy S-10, but I used a broom stick. I think the pipe approach looks to be a lot easier to work with.

I see....I was going to say it looks suspiciously like a piece of metal gas pipe.

Nice! I will be watching this thread closely. I have a '49 dodge that I would love to drop a 617 in. Those are some nice looking welds. I hope you never have to pull your lower oil pan.
